You would want to mark Disk 0 (C: ) in your screenshot as inactive so that only D: remains active.

Afterwards, see how it boots, and if you have both OSs available in the boot manager to select from.

If not, then try doing an automatic repair using your Windows 8 installation media to hopefully have it fix it for you automatically.

If you are still having issues, then post back with updated screenshots of all of the above again, and we'll go from there.

Before I do that, I should tell you that under boot manager in sys config I checked the box to make the boot "permanent," because the tutorial instructed me to do that. Do I need to make any change before I go ahead with Post #310 guidance?

Yep. If something goes wrong, then you can do the automatic repair.

Brink, I made the changes you recommended, and then rebooted my machine. "Disk Boot Failure" came up, but I ran Startup Repair as you had advised me to do and . . . Success! Everything is back to normal now.

I pledge to you I am going to stay very far away from Boot Manager from now on. That should be of some (very) small comfort to you.

Thank you once more for your patient help.

I'm in the opposite position. I have a Toshiba Laptop with Windows 8 Preloaded. Is there a tutorial to dual boot by adding Windows Seven that I have in .iso image form?

    Hey Miles,

Is you current Windows 8 installed with UEFI? If so, then you'll also need to install W7 with UEFI.

Are you installing the Windows 7 on a separate hard drive?

If so, then you can just install Windows 7 on the other drive to have a dual boot.

If not, then post back with a screenshot showing the full layout of your Disk Management to see what options you may have.

Only one physical disk. I already carved out a partition for data, such as backup images. Currently I have W7 Pro 32 bit running in VM Player to verify it's a good image. Here's the W8 Disk Management screenshot.

Edit: It is UEFI. Although currently I have Secure Boot off since I'm running the Big Muscle Glass theme enabler doodad in W8.

    Miles,

I'm not certain how this will work since you already have 5 primary partitions, but if you like, you could shrink C: by how much you want for Windows 7 to create a logical partition. Do not convert the disk to dynamic if prompted.

Afterwards, you should be able to install 64-bit Windows 7 using UEFI on the new partition.

When the installation is finished, you'll have the old black Windows Boot Manager screen instead of the new one since Windows 7 was installed last. You could use the tutorial below to enable the new Windows 8 boot screen.

I forgot one bit of info. I have a USB 3.0 stick with Macrium WinPE 5.0 that is UEFI bootable. I have plenty of space on it. I could boot it and either read the W7 iso off of it, or from the HD Backupimg partition. I'm being kind of cautious because I don't have another machine to go online and bail me out if I hose this setup.

Edit: The other thing is, the W7 image I have is 32 bit Pro with SP1.

Edit2: I think I see what you are saying. Only the x64 has UEFI support. (Downloading now.)

Will the above tutorial apply to Windows 8.1 also?

I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7 Do you recommend any precautions?
