Also, for awhile I had two choices for W8 when it came up, one of which would not work, and I deleted it using msconfig. I don't know if that has any bearing upon the problem. When I do fire up W8 everything seems to work well.

I can also boot to Win8 by changing disk order in bios.

UPDATE: Tried Startup Repair within Win8, said it couldn't repair.

QUESTION: What do you think of EasyBCD, and will these steps solve my problem? https://neosmart.net/wiki/easybcd/dual-boot/bcd-based/ (I haven't messed with anything for fear of losing my ability to boot W7.)
    Hello Cachry,

Sorry for the late reply. Please go ahead and post screenshots showing Disk Management and after entering bcdedit in an elevated command prompt while in Windows 7 and Windows 8 to see what it shows from both.

Ok. See if this will do the trick.

    1) While in Windows 7, mark as inactive Disk 0 (Win8 E: ) drive.

    2) Boot from your Windows 8 installation media, and run Automatic Repair at startup to see if it may be able to fix it now.

Shawn (I did my research and know your first name), I am truly indebted to you for helping me with what I am sure to you was a no-brainer, but for me was a nagging and anxiety-producing problem! Everything is working beautifully and I am most relieved. In the process of following you along, this old dog learned some new tricks.

Thank you once again for your assistance, and know I wish you well.

    Epilogue

When I tried my system this morning, I realized that last night (in my zeal, and being tired) I had left the Win8 DVD in the drive, and when I took it out the machine persisted in booting into Win7 with no option for running Win8. This was despite the fact that I had selected Win8 as the default option last night.

The machine went through CHKDSK when I removed the DVD and did a cold boot. CHKDSK had been prompted by "inconsistency" in one of the drives. I was relieved when it reported no errors.

Thinking that the HD containing Win8 needs to boot before the HD with Win7 on it, I changed the boot order in bios. That did the trick, and all works as it should without the Win8 disk in the DVD drive. Whew!

Thanks once more for your help with this.

    I Screwed Something Up

. . . and need some help again.

While running Win8, I changed a startup setting while trying to fix a video problem. I changed the setting from Selective to Normal startup. Now my computer doesn't show Win7 as an option but instead, Win8 Volume 1 and Win8.

I tried to change startup back to its previous setting but it wouldn't take. So, I am lost, and kicking myself for screwing around with the thing in the first place.

I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7 Do you recommend any precautions?
