Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista

    Thanks for that clarification.

Since that is the case, if the wrong drive is marked as active -- or if boot manager is confused (for lack of a better term) -- couldn't those things be corrected after the fact?

Can you tell I really don't want to crack the case open? Lazy so-and-so, I know.

    LOL, yeah I understand.

You could correct it afterwards if so, but it would be involved and be much easier to disconnect to prevent.

Okay, you are the expert and I've learned the hard way not to go it alone, will follow your recommendations. I may (or may not) need you help in the future, will probably wait a few days before disconnecting the drive(s), for now just want to say thanks. I appreciate the technical help and morale support.

    Have a great week.

I have what I assume are simple questions: In disconnecting the HD, does it matter if I disconnect the power or the data cable? And, since the drive is SATA, if data cable can I safely hot-swap?

You could disconnect either one or both cables to essentially prevent Windows from seeing it during installation.

Yes, you are able to hot-swap SATA drives by disconnecting the data cable like that. However, be sure that nothing is being saved to or loaded from the drive at the time to prevent corrupting the drive and/or files.

Okay . . . after a brief pause in the action I managed to install Win8 on the empty drive as I wanted, but there are problems. When I boot my computer, W7 comes up -unless- I have the W8 disk in the drive, whereupon that OS loads automatically and without referencing W7. So, neither OS is recognizing the other.

Also, for awhile I had two choices for W8 when it came up, one of which would not work, and I deleted it using msconfig. I don't know if that has any bearing upon the problem. When I do fire up W8 everything seems to work well.

I can also boot to Win8 by changing disk order in bios.

UPDATE: Tried Startup Repair within Win8, said it couldn't repair.

QUESTION: What do you think of EasyBCD, and will these steps solve my problem? https://neosmart.net/wiki/easybcd/dual-boot/bcd-based/ (I haven't messed with anything for fear of losing my ability to boot W7.)

I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7 Do you recommend any precautions?
