    Win7 (32) and Win 8.1 (64)

Thank you for the instructions on dual booting Win7 and Win8. I followed them today and everything went smoothly, except for one thing: My computer boots Win7 (32 bit) without giving me the option to boot Win8.1 (64 bit), which boots only from the DVD upon startup. I can't figure out what's wrong or how to fix it, and specific guidance would be most helpful because this is all very new to me.

If this info is posted somewhere else here I apologize for asking, but I was unable to find it using search.

Hello Cachry, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Which OS was installed 1st and 2nd?

For now, see if doing an automatic repair with your Windows 8 installation DVD may help.

    Thanks for getting back

Win7 was installed first, and today I installed Win8 per instructions here on a partition on Drive C.

Under Disk Management, the partition was named Drive G (which makes sense given my machine), but interestingly both Drive C and Drive G show up as "primary" partitions . . . I am wondering if that might be the problem, and if so, how to fix it.

Will await a response before trying Repair.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot of your Disk Management to see what all it shows.

Having trouble posting because I use Open Office and don't have "paperclip."

    Looking for work-around.

What do you have on Disk 0 and 2? They are showing as active and should not be normally.

For now, go ahead and do an automatic repair with your Windows 8 installation DVD to see if it may be able to fix your boot manager.

Disk 0 is essentially empty, and Disk 2 contains some files. Both are older disks. I recently had the larger disk (1) installed thinking the older ones might start getting flaky. Is it a problem that they are active?

I ran Repair as instructed. I received the message that it couldn't repair my PC. Now, I am wondering if maybe I should just uninstall Win8 and delete the partition, then install Win8 on Disk 0 . . . something I considered doing anyhow.

Brink, I decided to delete the partition with Win8 on it (per instructions here, thanks) and plan to install the OS on an empty drive (0) soon. But, I am wondering about the "active" drives you had a question about, and if there is something I should be doing to change the designation.

Replace Vista with 8 on dual boot PC
I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7 Do you recommend any precautions?
