Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista

    Windows 8 consumer preview

    Shawn,

Not strictly a "how to load" question, but I did a dual boot install booted from a DVD to a new partition. The install went fine and everything works great (as well as a Beta can) EXCEPT I can't see any of the programs installed on my Win7 partition (most importantly Office 2010 as Outlook is my mail client). Is there a way to link programs installed on the non-active partition or to install Win8 so that it looks at that other partition as well?

    Direction much appreciated!

    Paul

Hello Paul, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You will have to reinstall any programs in Windows 8 that you would like to run. You will not be able to run them through Windows 7 in Windows 8 like that.

Hi Thanks alot for the instruction, I am trying to install the preview in a partition in a dynamic disk. I have managed to get to the point when windows 8 installation is trying to instal updates, but the an error message poped up: "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed." Any idea how I can get around that? I only have one hard disk, is that the reason leading to the error?

Hello Anewbieuser, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm sorry, but you will not be able to install and boot Windows from a dynamic disk. You will only be able to with a basic disk.

    Hello Brink,
I've installed 3 different operating system's. Windows Vista is on a separate hard drive while Windows 7 & 8 are on the same individual drive. Both are differentiated by partition's. Everything was working just fine. Windows 8 booted to the operating system selection but after permitting Windows 7 to operation, I have yet to see the booting screen.
    How can I repair this?

The automatic fixing method through Windows 8 dvd didn't work and the message appeared "G:\Windows\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrarl.txt". I was able to comply with the system selection including default opearting machine varation.

    Hello ISF,

Windows 8 will always have to be set as the default OS to run at startup before you will see the newer Windows 8 boot screen. Otherwise, you will see the older boot screen from Windows 7 or Vista instead.

Default Operating System - Change Default Boot OS - Windows 7 Forums

    or

Startup Options - Choose a Default OS to Run at Startup in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
