Right, there seems to be a graphics/monitor problem. On my screen, everything is bland without contrast. I tried to find the graphics control center (a la Catalyst control center). But I have no clue where this is hiding. Also my monitor runs on a 'generic PnP driver'. Not idea whether that has anything to do with it.

I notice that several people have reported a black screen issue. It looks like they (MS) forgot some basic graphics drivers.

What graphics drivers do you have?

For AMD I have 8.93.7.0 dated 2/17/2012 and is newer than the Win8 driver listed on the AMD site.

nVidia 295.73 and it is W8 compatible too. I may have to look up the unattended.xml trick to have the W8 installer grab the driver from a USB drive that I saw mention of on the web.

I'm attempting this again but this time a) using the ISO from the public Customer Preview page rather than from my Technet account and b) am trying to do the dual boot installation from within my existing Vista C: drive. This time I can't even get started. It just isn't my week I'm beginning to think.

I just successfully burned the x64 ISO to a dvd using ImgBurn and opened the Sources folder and clicked Setup and got this:

I'm getting a persecution complex very rapidly.

Peter, What happens when you run it from the DVD. Worked flawlessly for me on my laptop. On the desktop I installed from the .iso - but into Virtual Box.

I like the vBox version a lot better. I have it minimized all day and when I see a new trick on the forums I can instantly try it out. I just bring up the vBox page. With the dual boot you have to always leave one system and reboot the other.

That is from the DVD. You mean try and boot with the DVD? Did that yesterday (but the DVD had a Technet ISO on it) and ended up at a permanent black screen and practically had to gut my machine to get my old multi-boot system back. I posted separately about that issue, nobody has responded thus far.

I had it installed before in an Oracle VM but don't like the smaller screen and the VM limitations.

That really puzzles me. I was able to install from the DVD without any problems. I had downloaded the .iso from here: Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview I had predefined a primary partition with Disk Management on my SSD.

It is very weird. It's DVD-RW media so I'll play around with other images, maybe try my Technet one again.

Replace Vista with 8 on dual boot PC
I have a Vista and Win 7 dual boot desktop. I want to replace Vista with 8. Is it just a case of booting into Vista and running the 8 install DVD as I did when I upgraded to 8 on my Win 7 laptop? What chance is there of the process screwing up booting into 7 Do you recommend any precautions?
