How to Do a Dual Boot Installation with Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista

I tried the exact same thing what you told but when I selected that new partition and clicked Next to install, I got some error.
I tried it again and got the same error. So I deleted that partition, created it again. Every time, the default drive letter was G but this time I selected any other drive letter and it worked perfect. I remembered it saying that G letter was used for some drive mapping or something. Not sure what could have caused this but its working now.
Thanks Shawn. Appreciate your help.![]()
Dear Engtianxi,
What if we don't shrink our partition and install in an empty drive instead for the purpose of a dual boot?
I mean what makes shrinking for dual boost a must? And what happens in we don't do it and install win 8 in a empty drive which we already had it empty?
My situation is like this : I have 4 partition and win 7 limitation is 4 partition as well, I cant shrink for 5th drive.
You can have as many partitions as you want. Just convert one of your primary partitions into a logical with the bootable CD of Partition Wizard. The C partition is a good candidate. Then shrink and make a new logical (simple) partition into which you can install Win 8.My situation is like this : I have 4 partition and win 7 limitation is 4 partition as well, I cant shrink for 5th drive
Hello Elesi, and welcome to Eight Forums.
Yes, you can install Windows 8 to a separate empty drive instead of another partition if you like. This would be considered step 2 in the tutorial.![]()
I think Shawn answered your question. But just for your information:Meanwhile, I think converting my c:\ to Logical is not a good idea because I have my Win7 on it installed.
As long as you have the 100MB active system partition, Win7 can be run off a logical partition and Win8 can also be installed in a logical partition. All BCDs will go into this active partition.
Note that some sytems (e.g. Dell) come with an active recovery partition which acts like the 100MB system partition. But here the principle is the same. Win7 and Win8 can live very well in logical partitions.
Just one simple question - when I remove Windows 8 from the partition it is on, will the files it added to the 100MB system partition be removed automatically? I've never dual booted in Windows 7 era before..![]()
Hello Teerex,
Yes, when you remove Windows 8 from the dual boot using the method in the tutorial below, it will also remove it from the MBR.

Shawn,
Any idea why I should have such a disastrous experience - no graphics driver in the installer or what?: Tried Installing On My Spare Drive - Total Disaster
I'm not used to things screwing up like that!!
Thanks in advance.
