Refresh Windows 8

  1. #60

Hey there Brink. So I have been struggling trying to refresh my win 8.1 for days now with no luck. I then decided to order the hard copies disk since I purchased my copy online. Just when I thought all troubles would soon be over when my disk arrived, I was quickly greeted with another brick wall. After going through all the motions (and Installation disk in computer) I am always given the following message... "Insert Media" some files are missing your windows installation or recovery media will provide these files.
But I have the actual win 8.1 direct from microsoft disk loaded in my CD tray. what gives? Is there any info I can provide to better help you (or anyone willing to help) understand my problem more? I'm no longer wanting to go through the motions of listing the many things of whats wrong. I went through that with MasterChief who was very helpful and knowledgeable. But before I tackle his list of things to do, and its a lot of steps I have never dealt with, I sure would love to at least find out why I paid 20$ for these disk and not be able to use them for what I bought them for, ya know? here is a screen shot at my brick wall.

    I don't know whether that was mentioned somewhere;

    1. If your 8.1 is an upgrade from 8, then your recovery partition is Windows 8 and refresh will set you back to Windows 8.

    2. You can make your own refresh image with the recimg command and replace the default image. Those are the parameters:

    /createimage <directory>
Captures a new custom recovery image in the location specified by
<directory>, and sets it as the active recovery image.

    /setcurrent <directory>
Sets the active recovery image to the CustomRefresh.wim file in the
location specified by <directory>. Windows will use this image when you
refresh your PC, even if a recovery image provided by your PC's
    manufacturer is present.

    /deregister
Deregisters the current custom recovery image. If a recovery image
provided by your PC's manufacturer is present, Windows will use that
image when you refresh your PC. Otherwise, Windows will use your
installation media when you refresh your PC.

    /showcurrent
Displays the path to the directory in which the current active recovery
    image is stored

    3. It is advisable to keep the installation .exes of your downloaded programs around (unless you want newer versions) because those installations you lose when running a refresh.

See if your registered reimage is win 8 or win8.1.

You need to find it, so at cmd prompt, type:

    reagentc /info.

That will tell you the folder containing winre.wim.

You can get the info on it by typing :

    dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:<WIM_file>

well... my whole head kind of smells right now due to having it stuck in my ass! The disk I bought from microsoft are totally windows 8! not 8.1! UGH!!! So what i forgot was, when i bought windows 8 it was just that at the time.. windows 8 & very soon after purchasing I upgraded to 8.1... Oh boy do i feel silly.
Thank you guys for replying to this issue of mine. I decided to just go ahead and reinstall fresh & then setup my system how i like it, then create the personal refresh image you so kindly posted for me. At the moment I'm waiting on crashplan to finish backing up my data and I'll just restore through crashplan. Best recovery app of all time!!!

'If you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 preinstalled and updated to Windows 8.1, then when you refresh Windows, it will restore Windows 8. Afterwards, you will need to update to Windows 8.1 via the Store again.' Does this also apply if you have created and registered a Custom Refresh Image with Windows 8.1 update installed?

Also, thanks for pointing out that 'If you set UAC to Always notify me, then you will not be able to use the refresh and reset Windows 8 features. These features require UAC to be set to the default or lower level to work.' Fortunately, mine was set at the default level when I initiated a Custom Refresh:-)

No - your image replaces the default.

    Here is some more detail:

When you create an image using the /createimage parameter, the image you create is automatically set as the default refresh image. If you have multiple refresh images you can choose the active image by using the /setcurrent parameter.

Refresh Windows 8
I have read the tutorial (Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image) . Would I not get the same result if I created a Disk and Partition Backup using a program like Acronis or Easeus? That way I hope to keep all my initial system, personal files and third party applications.
