    Rich,

You might see if you may be able to refresh using OPTION ONE at boot instead.

    Hello quickslvr,

Refreshing Windows 8 would not be a recommended way to try and get rid of a virus. It most likely wouldn't. If you like, please post about your virus issue in the System Security forum area to see what we may be able to do to help with it.

Instead, refreshing Windows 8 is used to repair your current Windows 8 installation without having to do a clean install.

Shawn, thanks for this informative post, although I hope I had seen this before I refreshed my Samsung PC. Nonetheless, even if I'd seen this prior to refreshing my PC, I totally had a different experience.

Here's what happened: Something was wrong with our wi-fi connection. I hovered my cursor over the wi-fi icon on the lower right part of my taskbar. Then just below the wi-fi connection (blacked in the picture below) was a "suggestion" that I refresh my PC.
Click image for larger version (This image was taken later, i.e., after refreshing the PC)

I obliged and clicked that option, thinking this would fix whatever problems. Then suddenly I was brought to PC Settings. From there I found my way to General section, then to "Refresh your PC without affecting your files." Then I clicked "Get started" (after all, it'll keep my files, or so it says--I'm not a technical person, btw.). Then this band came up, followed by this. After clicking "Refresh," my PC restarted itself. There was NO "Refreshing your PC" with a per cent amount displayed. No, I didn't get to that part. It just restarted. I thought that was just okay. When my PC booted I was shown this tutorials on how to use Windows 8 as if I had just installed the OS. Then everything on my desktop was gone, except for the Recycle Bin, SW Update, and Removed Apps.html. I opened the html file and found out some 40 apps were removed, including Quick Starter and other Samsung apps (see image below).

40 apps. It's so frustrating. I bought my PC with a pre-installed OS. So I didn't have the installation disk when I refreshed my PC (I don't understand how it could have re-installed Windows 8 when I didn't have an installation disk; maybe that's why I didn't get to the "Refreshing your PC" part and my PC just restarted itself?). Now I don't know how to get the apps back. I use my PC for school and office work and now I can't even open .doc files. It's just so frustrating. I never had these problems with Vista or with 7. And then I found out that there's no System Restore with 8. Is there any way I could get my apps back? Does Windows.old have any use at all? What are my options, if any at all?

Refresh Windows 8
I have read the tutorial (Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image) . Would I not get the same result if I created a Disk and Partition Backup using a program like Acronis or Easeus? That way I hope to keep all my initial system, personal files and third party applications.
