Another vitally important point is to UPDATE YOUR BIOS AND DRIVERS for Win7 prior to trying to upgrading to Win8. My (very tech savvy) friend hung up in the upgrade process simply because his Intel drivers had not been updated in a year. The mobo manufacturer even clearly stated that the newer driver was necessary for Win8 upgrade on the update page. Do yourself a favor and get your drivers ready for the upgrade!
Whew, nice job Brink! I had to read through all the posts to make sure I was not duplicating any other post, and your dedication is outstanding!

When you upgrade to Windows 8 and go into the desktop are any of your Windows 7 desktop icons still available or do you have to put them back onto the Windows 8 desktop, also when I downloaded Windows 8 I forgot to download it as an ISO, and it just downloaded all the files that were in the iso, can you upgrade to Win 8 using those files from the HDD or do you have to install it via usb or DVD.

Hell Nugar, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It all depends on if you select the Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps at step 8 or not for the desktop icons. In addition, it depends if the programs any icons may be for are compatible with Windows 8 and kept. If incompatible programs get removed, then any icon on the desktop for them will be as well. The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will let you know if anything is incompatible though.

If you used the "Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant" to download Windows 8, do you still have the Install Windows shortcut on your desktop? If so, then you could just run that shortcut to start upgrading to Windows 8.

If you don't have the shortcut, then the "Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant" stores the Window 8 upgrade installation setup.exe to run in the hidden folder below.

    Hope this helps,

Not sure about this, but if you're upgrading from XP to 8 you will be required to wipe XP, but the installer should still keep al your user info. programs, drivers, etc will have to be reinstalled from scratch. this isnt the case when upgrading from 7 to 8. correct me if i'm wrong, but this is what i've heard.

    Hello Stephen,

When upgrading from XP (SP3), you only keep user accounts and files.

When upgrading from Windows 7, you keep backup schedule, programs, Windows settings, user accounts and files.

The blue Note box at the top of the tutorial will have more details about this though.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Hello muiacir,

It's more of a personal choice, but a clean install usually gives you the best results.

If you clean install, then you start with a fresh install of Windows 8 without anything from your previous Windows.

If you upgrade, you keep backup schedule, programs, Windows settings, user accounts and files from your previous Windows 7 in Windows 8.
