Hello Moonshine, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If the administrator account in Windows 7 had no password created for it, then you could just leave the password field empty and click on Next.

I think I'm confusing myself because I was reading the Windows Team Blog about the Windows 8 Upgrade offer, I'm lost. I remember when I was downloading the Release Preview, it gave the option to create a bootable USB drive or an .iso file. Reading it, it said that you can choose to reformat the hard drive as part of the upgrade offer. What blows my brain here is that I thought you had to install from an existing OS, just a pure upgrade and nothing else, files are kept and whatnot. I also thought that is how the upgrade worked, the upgrade advisor checks the current OS to see if it's a legitimate copy, THEN it upgrades.

I vehemently prefer to wipe down and thoroughly format the hard drive and start fresh. I also want to be able to use one bootable USB drive and keep the install files on it without having to make a new one, or having to constantly download the upgrade advisor and wait for it to download.

So I guess what I'm asking here for enlightenment is can you in fact still do an upgrade install like a traditional custom install, not have to constantly download a new .iso file or make a new bootable USB drive?

    Hello Andy,

Yes, you can still do a traditional upgrade like in the tutorial when you use either a Windows 8 Upgrade ISO, USB, or DVD.

If you use the Windows8-UpgradeAssistant.exe file, then you'll have to wait for the download each time.

We're still waiting on more information about any different upgrade options, but we may need to wait until the 26th to find out more.

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64b

    Hello,

First of all, thanks for a good guide, it's one of the best I found so far.

I have a problem trying to install my windows ending up in following:

    win8mahtava.png Picture

I have uninstalled Anti virus (Avira) and SpyBot that I used trying to get it to work, but with no luck.

I have Windows 7 ult 64b atm and core i7 processor, ssd drive with 25 gb free, etc.

Any tips, the "error code" is not telling much..

    Hey,

I get to step 11 and everything works fine. I run into a problem when It restarts, then it starts loading and says it encounters and error every time. It flashes off the screen to fast to be read. Then it blue screens, and just reboots and reverts to win 7.

Hello Atheist, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Did it find any issues at steps 9 and 10?

Did you disable or uninstall any security software first that may interfere with the upgrade?

    Hello Brink,
Thank you for replying. The security software has been disabled. Steps 9 and 10 ran fine, and i unistalled the app it told me too, but i got the error.Click image for larger version After doing a lil bit of research. It is maybe my apps that are causing problems. I am re running the upgrade keeping files only. Ill post an update in a while.

I was able to get past that error by disableing the anitmalware driver check when booting into the windows setup.

Just wanted to share with everyone.

I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 Pro this past Sunday using the $39.95 Microsoft upgrade link. It went smoothly all the way through Win8 authentication & updates. The Win8 key was embedded in the upgrade file so I didn't even have to enter anything.

If my OS gets corrupted in the future for any reason and there is a need to reinstall Win8Pro, is the Win8 upgrade ISO or disk capable of installing a full version of Win8? If not, how would we handle such a situation? It would be truly cumbersome to have to reinstall Windows 7 just to use the Win8 upgrade file to get back to Windows 8.
