How to Turn Check Boxes to Select Items On or Off in Windows 8 and 8.1

You can use check boxes to make selecting multiple items in any order easier to do.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off using check boxes to select files, folders, and drives in only your user account in Windows 8.

When using check boxes is turned on, you can just hover the pointer over each item to reveal the check box to be able to check (select) or uncheck (unselect) it.

Note   Note
By default, you could also select multiple files and folders using keyboard shortcuts.

To select random multiple files or folders:
Press and hold the Ctrl key while clicking/taping on a file or folder to select them, then release the Ctrl key when finished.

To Select everything inbetween two selected files or folders including the selected files and folders:
Select a file or folder, press and hold the Shift key, click/tap on another file or folder to select them and everything inbetween them, then release the Shift key.


EXAMPLE: Selecting Items with Check Boxes
NOTE: This is an example using a desktop icon and File Explorer.

OPTION ONE

To Turn Selecting with Check Boxes On or Off using File Explorer


1. While in File Explorer, click/tap on the View tab. (see screenshot below)​

2. To Use Check Boxes to Select Items
A) Check/tap the Item check boxes box in the ribbon bar. (see screenshot above)​
3. To Not Use Check Boxes to Select Items
A) Uncheck/tap the Item check boxes box in the ribbon bar. (see screenshot above)​





OPTION TWO

To Turn Selecting with Check Boxes On or Off using Folder Options


1. Open Folder Options, and click/tap on the View tab. (see screenshot below)​

2. To Use Check Boxes to Select Items
A) Check/tap the Use check boxes to select items box, then click/tap on OK. (see screenshot above)​
3. To Not Use Check Boxes to Select Items
A) Uncheck the Use check boxes to select items box, then click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below step 1)​





OPTION THREE

To Turn Selecting with Check Boxes On or Off using a BAT File



Note   Note
The .bat files below are for the registry key and value below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

AutoCheckSelect DWORD

0 = off
1 = on


1. To Use Check Boxes to Select Items
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 3 below.​

2. To Not Use Check Boxes to Select Items
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 3 below.​
Turn_Off_Check_Boxes_to_Select_Items.bat
download
3. Save the .bat file to the desktop, and run it.​
4. If prompted, click/tap on Run.​
NOTE: If you like, you can stop getting the Run prompt by unblocking the downloaded .bat file.​
5. You will now notice a command prompt quickly open and close while your screen flickers as explorer is restarted to apply the registry changes.​
