Hi,

Is it possible to get hold of an ISO or something similar to get a fresh/clean install of Windows 8.1 update 1 on my Surface RT? Via USB i.e.

Thanks!

Not legally as far as I know, unless you have a Technet or MSDN subscription. I have seen Updated ISO's available but I wouldn't touch them with a 50 foot pole as I don't trust anything that could of potentially been compromised.

Agree, but would be nice to have something. As my RT has started to act a bit strange lately. But thanks for the reply anyway.

I agree it would be great, I have a pretty good internet connection and my PC isn't bad so updating isn't hard but having said that It's so much easyier doing it all at once, especially when down the track.
After having windows 7 for so long, in the last 6 months of reinstalling, updates took hours there were so many.

I did read somewhere a mention that there may be something available after April 30th, can't remember where, may of been in here from Brink?

Was really to avoid all those updates I wanted this in the first place. Guess it will not be possible to "replace" the inbuilt restore version of Win 8.1?

considering that update 1 just came out...

if you want some kind of USB or ISO, you could wait for it.

Its out on technet?

Don't know if it is. Don't have access to dl from technet as I don't have paid services there.
But probably someone will release an ISO I can put on a USB stick and install a fresh copy from, because after the 8.1 update 1 install, it's constantly freezing up during IE metro use.

You cannot do this.

Windows RT runs on an ARM based processor. Windows 8 does NOT.

As pparks1 said, you need Windows RT not Windows 8.1. I haven't seen a Windows RT download on TechNet or MSDN. As far as I know Microsoft is not providing Windows RT as a separate Software package and it is ONLY available pre-installed on certified hardware.

I obvously assumed that all knows Surface runs Windows RT, but of course, newly updated version of Windows RT (with 8.1.1 update) was what I meant.
Anyways, seems like they don't do this for that specific version and closing thread as solved.

The Surface Pro runs Windows 8.1 and the Surface RT runs Windows RT. Most know that but not everybody does. When in doubt I try to clarify with what I say. Microsoft calls it Windows RT so when someone says Windows 8.1 I take that to mean they aren't talking about Windows RT. It wasn't clear to me that you knew the difference but obviously you did. Anyway, as you've found out, Windows RT is not available for download. It's not even up on MSDN or TechNet.

It has a secured partition and you cannot install anything on it. Microsoft does not even offer to the public any copies of Windows RT.

Hi there

Maybe I've mis-understood this thread but I don't think you can install standard Windows on an RT device -- that's why I'm 100% glad that the surface pro 3 is a WINDOWS and NOT an RT device.

I like many think that RT doesn't have anywhere to go except to an early grave.

Cheers

You are correct, you cannot install Windows 8.x on a device with an ARM based processor architecture. That's what Windows RT is for. Similarly, you can't install Windows RT on a device with an x86/AMD64 processor. The confusion in this thread (the way I read it) was using term Windows 8.1 when it should have been referred to as Windows RT. Some thought the OP was looking for a Windows 8.1 image but they were looking for a Windows RT (8.1 equivalent) image. I'm not even sure I can explain it without it being confusing. There is 8.0 and 8.1 and then there is Windows RT and Windows RT ? What do you call the Windows RT equivalent to 8.1? Anyway, the OP has moved on so we should likely just let this thread fade away. ;)
