Touchscreen worked with preview but not with release

I have an HP TX2000 laptop/tablet convertible. I was using the preview release of windows 8 with no problems at all, touchscreen stuff worked great. Now that I bought windows 8 (specifically because it worked so good on this laptop) my touchscreen isn't working with my hands. When I check system properties its says its "pen support" instead of what it used to say "Pen and Touch support." With the preview version it worked straight away, no downloading of third party drivers needed.

I'm not missing any drivers, and tried just reinstalling the OS (Touch works during setup btw), and downloaded all available updates from Microsoft.

Anyone got an idea on how I can bring this functionality back?

I have an Acer Iconia Tab W500P with a similar issue. Mine also worked flawlessly with the preview release but Windows 8 Professional has created some issues. System properties says "No pen or touch input available for this display." I also get error messages saying "your computer has run into a problem and needs to restart." Recovery says "It looks like Windows didn't load properly." I also found that touch works during setup. I downloaded all updates. I also when to Acer and downloaded their upgrade assistant to no avail.

I've tried downloading other drivers for it, and got an issue with shutting down where it just says "something went wrong" with a frowny face, and then it just restarts. So I need to reload the OS again, but I did get the touchscreen to sort of work by downloading the newest tablet pc drivers from Wacom, which were updated yesterday. The problem is that I can't calibrate it, and its not accurate. Also it works just like a mouse, so you can't use gestures to swipe through the metro screen, which is kind of the whole point. I did see that they're going to be releasing drivers to use with windows 8 gestures, so maybe that can get us back some of the functionality. I dont think its going to be as good as before though. Maybe you can try it getting those drivers and see how it works for your laptop. You can get it from here (select Tablet PC from the drop down menu) Hardware Drivers | Wacom

I read somewhere that the release version of windows 8 will only support "5-point" touch screens (which most pre-2012 laptops are not), but I'm having trouble finding where I saw that, and I don't see it mentioned anywhere else.

So I got it working totally by accident. Its working great now, just like before. So here's what I did.

I brought my computer to work to try and reload it there during my downtime. It was still giving me the shut down issues, so thats why I wanted to reload the operating system. But I realized I forgot my product key at home, and Windows 8, by default, doesn't let you temporarily skip entering the key like all previous version of Windows did. So I looked online and found a workaround that makes it so you can skip it temporarily, by creating a configuration file in the disk's image. So I ripped my DVD onto my computer, created that config file, rebuilt the iso image file, installed it by skipping the product key, and... the touchscreen was working...

It makes no sense at all, but it works. I'm afraid to go home and enter in my key, for fear that it will for some reason break it again. But I'll see how that goes. Here's the link to the configuration workaround if you want to try it yourself. I had to figure out some stuff on how to make a bootable iso with ImgBurn, but it wasn't too difficult, there's guides online for that too.

do you have the system builder version of windows or the upgrade version? in the system builder version, you need to have windows 8 certified touch hardware. they've disabled it for the system builder but left it in for the upgrade version apparently.

Windows 8 multitouch hardware requirements

I haven't confirmed this myself though.

I'm surprised you upgraded the TX2000 to Windows 8. I'm not because there weren't any WDDM 1.2 drivers and the hacked drivers won't pass HDCP encryption for things like Netflix. Plus, I can't get my TX2000 with an Intel 80GB SSD to install the enterprise evaluation version of Windows 8 (enough that it scared me off of buying Windows 8 for this machine). And the quick launch drivers fail under Windows 8 so the screen won't rotate when I convert the tablet.

I'm using the system builder version. Didn't know about that, thats lame. Also it stopped working again as soon as I activated windows and restarted. I'll have to figure something else out. As for the TX2000, netflix works perfectly fine using the metro app and in chrome, and my 120gb ssd doesn't have any problems in it. The rotate button doesn't work, but that doesn't bother me much. Its oriented fine anyways for most things, and the pdf reader has a built in rotation feature.

what video driver are you using? do you have the full 1280x800 resolution? what's your experience like?

it was bad enough for me with the enterprise evaluation version that I thought of not installing the final version.

what you can do (but would really suck) is... you can upgrade your system builder version with the upgrade version to get back the touch.

or you can wait for someone to figure out how to restore the functionality. it has to be a registry tweak of some sort. or some file replacement.

Yep, full 1280x800. I'm just using the default driver that was installed with windows. Its says WDDM 1.1 though. Performance seems about the same as with Vista and 7, I can play simple games like Plants Vs Zombies without issue, and video playback is perfect.

Yeah, I'll have to see what forces the hardware check and find a way to disable it. I'm not going to spend more money to upgrade my os from the full version after already paying for the full version. Thanks for this Microsoft, I can see why you're so beloved.
