How to turn on window defender on window 8.1

It should be on automatically;
however, if you installed any 3rd party anti-virus and/or anti-malware and/or security suite --
Windows 8 will automatically turn off and keep turned off Windows Defender.

Until you have properly removed the anti-virus program, mostly done via the uninstall tool of the company.

So, have you had any such programs installed?

Here are the things that you need to do:
1. Uninstall any 3rd-party antivirus program such as malwarebytes, avast, avg, norton, kaspersky or trend micro.
2. Press the WINDOWS and R keys on your keyboard.
3. Type services.msc on the Run window and press ENTER.
4. On the list of services, check and look for Windows Defender and make sure the status column says: "Started".

REMINDER: Do not attempt to start Windows Defender while the 3rd-party antivirus software is installed. Follow step 1 first.

You don't have to uninstall Malwarebytes to use windows defender, Malwarebytes can run with most other antivirus programs.
