If you ask me, Comodo Firewall. Or better yet just use Comodo Internet Security Premium which is free and get their firewall combined with their antivirus.

I used the free version of OutPost Firewall for a while. I don't like firewalls. I forget why I stopped using it specifically other than that I find them to be more hassle than I want to deal with.

I haven't used it in quite some time. I can't tell you if there is still a free one or if it is any good for that reason. :)

But I do remember when I was using firewalls it seemed better than many others. For what that is worth. :)

I like Sphinx Windows 10 Firewall Control as addition to Windows Firewall.
But this one is nice as well: https://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html

Tell me about it, I have spent weeks creating perfect rules for my firewall, just so I could allow everything, that needed internet connection anyway. A router with SPI firewall is more than enough for an inbound protection as for outbound, if the computer is clean and installed with trusted software, there is no point blocking it. Windows Firewall with a better GUI is more then enough.

i've tried sphinx version awhile back.. i did like it.. I guess I can go back to that.. it was neat.

I will also try the personal firewall. I think i've heard of it with the HIPS? it has.. not sure if that is a good thing or not.. but gonna find out.

I also have a [DEL]10[/DEL] 7 year old router from At&t.. so I don't know about my routers security is up to date so to speak..

If you have set it up properly, then age does not matter, we still use IPv4.
Even without SPI firewall, it still blocks all incoming connections by default.

I tend to disable HIPS, because it is somewhat bothersome. In theory HIPS is better than any AV out there, because it will alert you when an unknown applications access things, it should not, but you have to know, what to look for. Usually HIPS comes with a learning mode or preinstalled rules for trusted apps, so it should not be that bad, but you better check it out yourself.

Well the only "setup" i've done on the router is add password to join the network.. and then a password to change the settings on the router page..

that's the only setup i've done..

Well, unless they've fixed it, say away from Zone Alarm. A few years back I installed the free version. What a complete cluster*&^#! It set the DNS server to them. I had nothing but problems. And after I uninstalled, I couldn't connect to the internet. I spent hrs in the registry finding everything it left. Still couldn't connect. Changed the DNS server back to my ISP. Still couldn't connect. Finally I said screw it and reformatted.

I used Comodo's firewall until my last computer fried. I liked it. Also, it alerted me when I had a DOS attack happening. It logged the IP address of the attacker. Guess where it came from? The Chinese government. I looked the addy up.

When I got this machine, they tossed in Kaspersky Internet Security for $15. When I renewed, it was $29 which is $30 cheaper than the off the shelf price.

Comodo was way too many options and things to change when All you want to do is say yes or no to a prompt that allows or doesn't allow something to connect to the internet..

I will say I felt unbelievably safe with Hips and comodo.. but it was absolutely ridiculous.. nobody will ever figure out the god-awful way they setup comodo (like the rulesets and etc) it's just too much..

It's back to Sphinx or binisoft or personal firewall.. they do the job and with one click.. my gosh..
