Solved Looking to Replace Norton.

Hi All,

This is my first post here on the forum. I've been using Norton AV for the past year or so. Due to the fact that my internet provider freely offers it as a bonus for being a customer, but I feel that it's just way to resources hungry. Taking up much needed disk space, not to mention it's high cup usage and annoying pop-up's.

Would anyone be able to offer me any alternatives, when replacing Norton's bloated software. To help give my machine it's much needed protection?

Regards.

As far as Norton still using a lot resources and high CPU usage, not so true nowadays as older version might of been this way.
Using Norton Security not causing me any issues or using a lot of resources or CPU, see here. As far as cost of it might not want to spend 40-50 bucks to renew it as many other AV out there that are good and cheaper. Norton does get decent rating on detection, i have no issues with popups as can be turned off, this is probably due to yours is also expiring.

The Norton software is provided free from my internet provider and as long as I'm a customer it doesn't expire.
The program is quite large and takes up valuable space on my SSD.
I'm basically looking to replace it mainly for that reason and for the reasons already stated.

O.k. i see, also stated about being resource hog which is a thing of the past, not sure what version you have now and how large your SSD is.
My Norton's Security 2015 takes about 347MB disk space. Some use Windows Defender along with Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software

Thanks for the links.
I do have Malwarebytes installed. I'm also having trouble understand the comparison charts given on the AV-Test page.
Nonetheless, there are a lot of users that highly recommend the use of Avast along with Malwarebytes. I was considering going that route to replace Norton.
Would this be something that you feel could be a good alternative to Norton?

I see... in that case Windows Defender has most of them beat.

On the other hand, maybe I'm being a little hasty in wanting to replace Norton. i have been using it for over a year, with not a single issue. Except the amount of disk space it uses.
According to the AV-Test charts, Norton has very low scores.

Having good internet surfing skills, as well as being cautious about what and where files are downloaded. Has much to do with ones computer security.

BTW... I see that you're from NY, I was born and raised in NYC/East Village. I miss it very much, nothing compares to it.

No, Avira, Bitdefender,Norton and Kapersky more white dots the better. That is key, being cautious about downloads and links you click on. Can't run 2 AV's at same time as may and will be conflicts, run Malwarebytes as a scanner along with Windows Defender as realtime protection. Again what year version of Norton A/V ? I have Norton AntiVirus, version 21.7.0.11, installed on 6/7/2015.
Your suggestion to run Malwarebytes and Windows Defenderis is one that I've been seeing a lot about lately. Which is something that seems to be well worth considering.
Thanks jds63 and Westchester county, IMHO is among one of the most beautiful places to live in NY state.

I really like living in AZ, but the food and water here is atrocious, and I always seem to be craving NY style pizza.

Some swear by using that combo and also this for browser protection, as long as you are cautious online Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit - Free Zero-Day Exploit Protection

Your welcome ! Westchester is nice, but expensive to live in. Love to go more up north were to me is most beautiful parts of this state.
Norton A/V might be fine, occasionally do scans with free Malwarebytes.

Your welcome ! Westchester is nice, but expensive to live in. Love to go more up north were to me is most beautiful parts of this state.
Norton A/V might be fine, occasionally do scans with free Malwarebytes.

I think you may be right. Thanks for your suggestions. ;)
I'll stick with Norton and run periodic scans with Malwarebytes as a precautionary measure. This is what I've been doing for a while now.
Not much space on my SSD though.
I was also thinking about adding symbolic links, for some of the programs that don't provide options of where they install.
What do you think about creating these symbolic links, to move the data from the primary SSD to my secondary HDD?

Hey you are getting it for free that's a no brainer why buy another A/V. Your Welcome. Not much space i am not sure i understand as Norton being biggest space hog you have. How big is the SSD ? Remove programs you do not use, move data to another drive (documents, videos, pictures, music, etc..) as should always keep a backup of stuff like this. Install certain stuff on the other drive. Like if you have games, install them on other drive. Always clean history, browser cache and temp files use this and run Disk Cleanup CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Not familiar with using symbolic links, but do not see is how it saves space on SSD. Complete Guide to Symbolic Links (symlinks) on Windows or Linux

Do not want to do too much constant rewrites, writes and erases to a SSD.

Yeah, I've done all that you mentioned. What I have on my SSD is, Win 8.1 OS, Norton, Chrome and Nvidia software. I moved/installed everything else that i could on my secondary HDD.
I guess I may be somewhat SSD space obsessed.:)

Hard to say, you are seeing what i am not. SSD started at something like 64GB went to 128GB, 250-256GB, 500-512GB and now 1TB.
That obsessed by bigger one, save you the stress. Plus SSD as you know runs faster, so whatever is on that will respond much quicker. I have 2 SSD's 512GB and 1 HDD for DATA

Intel makes good SSD's could get slightly bigger for OS drive, i know Intel's drives are expensive. As said software run better of course on the SSD. Having so much more room on HDD you may consider moving stuff there, reinstalling, unless you decide on a bigger SSD.

Regards.

You can try using Trend Micro Internet Security. Been using it for years and the best there is in Japan.
