Using Hyper V VM's for virus testing-is it safe?

I have a few VM's om hyper-v running on Win 8.1 pro. I'd like to practice some virus removal on a Vista and/or Windows 7 VM. Is it safe? I assume my host machine would not be affected?

I run many virtual machines all the time installing an Antivirus would only reduce your performance! Virtual Machines are already slow. Will this virtual machine be on the network? If so you just increased your attack vector to one more system that can compromise the rest of the network. There are viruses out there that I am willing to bet money that can jump from Virtual Machines to host os. Viruses are weird some will even make sure you can't analyze it. Some are even aware of what OS they are in, if in virtual machine or not and so much more.

So if you do this proceed with caution and be careful.
