Solved Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 100% CPU utilization...

My system is:

CPU: i5-3350P, 3.1GHz
Memory: 16GBs
Drive: 128GBs SSD
OS: Windows 8.1
Applications: standard office programs, Office 2013 and Visio 2013

About a month or so after installing Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 on my system, the "avp.exe" (Kaspersky's AV protection file name) runs at close to 100% CPU utilization constantly. Effectively making my system run like a dog, a very tired one.

I left it alone for couple hours, but the avp.exe was still hugging up the CPU. Well, it did stop after Kaspersky was uninstalled and Windows Defender re-activated. The system is back to its original speed.

Anyone else experienced avp.exe hugging up the CPU and if you did, what was the resolution?

Some people do have the same problem, probably a compatibility issue with a certain driver/software.

Sometimes the best solution is to use a different AV, because finding a cause can be quite challenging. It is the same like with prescribed drugs, some just do not play nicely with your body, so you move to different.

You can always contact the support, after all, you have paid for it.

EDIT: I have just noticed, that they offer a paid premium support.
In other words, they screw up your PC and then ask money to fix it?!

I did contact tech support on this issue and no, they did not charge me. Other than the license fee, that is. They have asked me to uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 and install Kaspersky Internet Security 2014. Here's the tech's email, personal information has been removed/replaced:

Subject: Kaspersky - Support INC0000xxxxxxxx Kaspersky AVP spiking CPU

Hello ,

Thank you for contacting Kaspersky Lab Technical Support. I apologize for the inconvenience you are having regarding this system issue with Kaspersky, I will be more than glad to assist you with this issue.

I do apologize for the issues you are having with Kaspersky. In order to fix this issue with Kaspersky AVP spiking your CPU and slowing down your computer, you will need to downgrade to the 2014 version. This issue has been fixed in the 2016 version that will be released this summer, but we are still awaiting a fix for the 2015 version. Unfortunately, this does not appear imminent so doing the downgrade to 2014 is recommended. You can be confident you still have full protection with the 2014 version. In order to downgrade, please uninstall the 2015 software and then install the 2014. You can uninstall the 2015 normally through the Control Panel. Then, download the 2014 from here:
KIS: Kaspersky Internet Security 2014

Please keep me posted as I really wanted to get this issue resolve. If you have further question feel free to reply to this email. Thank you and have a great day

Kindly reply to this message if you need further assistance.

If your issue has been resolved, please let us know. If you do not reply we will automatically resolve your request in 7 day(s).

Best regards,

I am just hesitant to install the 2014 version since this wasn't the only problem that my system had with KIS 2015. Maybe the KIS 2014 would not have these issues, but I don't have time to Beta test KIS 201x.

I am just suprised that Kaspersky would release a version that they don't even intend to fix. At least that's how I've interpreted the tech's email...

I've only recently installed KIS 2015, and just found out that I was affected by this annoying issue. Seems that this has been going on for a few months, and the fix, as you point out, hasn't been forthcoming. I've just now installed KIS 2014 and threw at it what caused the issue with 2015. So far, even though it's early days, this issue hasn't returned, so it seems that for now KIS 2014 is what I'll have to use until the fix turns up for 2015 or 2016 rears its head.

I've always been led to believe that Kaspersky were a premium anti-virus product, but this and the shenanigans I had in trying to stop it automatically installing extensions and plugins in Firefox (all solved) has made me wonder.

My confidence level with Kaspersky is non-existent, I'd rather stick with Windows Defender with augmented protection such as:

  • UAC enabled, non-admin account for everyday tasks, etc.
  • Winpatrol
  • EMET
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Premium
  • Weekly scans with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Emisoft free version
  • Weekly, or as needed image backup with Macrium Reflect
I'll take my chances with the protection described above, instead of continuously Beta testing KIS 201x...

Thanks, but the problem is known by Kaspersky and a fix is meant to be coming soon... apparently. I'm just waiting till the fix comes about before upgrading back to it. So far, KIS 2014 has been fine for me. Actually, I think 2014 is working smoother than 2015 for me, but maybe that's wishful thinking. ;)

The "lot of knowledge" in the forum didn't help people in the Kaspersky forum. They've been told for the last two month or so that the fix is coming. The email from the tech seemingly indicates that the fix may never come for KIS 2015...

After my experience with KIS 2015, I don't want to be a Beta tester for KIS 2016. There are plenty of other solutions that are just as good as Kaspersky.

While I understand that downgrading works, I didn't buy KIS 2014; I've purchased KIS 2015. They can keep KIS 2014 as long as they'll give my money back. And that's is in the works, but remains to be seen if it'll ever take place. As soon as they do, I'll add Malwarebytes Anti-Malware premium to the list of augmented security solutions to Windows Defender.

It's somewhat understandable that at times software will have issues, especially if the issue is resolved in an expedited fashion. What is not understandable the lackadaisical attitude of Kaspersky toward this major issue. It's either the KIS 2015 is fubar, or the lack of developer resources holding the fix back. I tend to lean in the direction of the second one, especially in the light of KIS 2016 being released in August later this year.

Seems that the fix for this annoying issue in KIS 2015 is scheduled for early May, according to one of their technical support engineers.

I'm probably going to wait a while till I upgrade to the fixed version, because who knows what other issues might rear their head, and also I'm finding my machine a bit snappier with KIS 2014 compared to KIS 2015. Then again, I freely admit that this could be a placebo effect, but 2014 is still partially supported and getting virus definitions, so no rush to move on.

BTW, it seems that this issue only affects KIS 15.02.xxx; versions 15.01.xxx and 15.00.xxx don't appear to be affected.

They even closed the thread dealing with this issue, seeing how popular it had become, but have since reopened it. Seems that mid-June has passed. Maybe it's meant to be next year's mid-June...

Makes one wonder, if state sponsored hacking of Kaspersky's internal network has anything to do with the constantly delayed fix for KIS 2015. The hack started in the second half of 2014 and discovered by Kaspersky in February of 2015. Maybe the developers are too busy cleaning up the backdoors that implanted by hackers in to Kaspersky solutions.
