Ad-Aware worked fine on Win 8, but they kept bugging me to buy the paid edition. I just found out that it had turned off Windows Defender without informing me, and it would not allow me to turn Defender back on. I have deleted Ad-Aware and restored Defender.

Hi, Vince53. The reason Ad-Aware disabled Windows Defender on Windows 8 is because the recent versions of AAW include anti-virus definitions.

(In the event you weren't aware, Lavasoft was acquired in January, 2011. See my article at Surprisingly Little Information on Lavasoft Acquisition and the later reports at SC Magazine, Lavasoft's new owners operated misleading websites and The Register, Were Lavasoft's buyers once on its hit list?.)

Corrine, that's one of the best posts I have ever read. The company that now owns Ad-Aware has a history of deceptive practices, including selling free software to unsuspecting buyers and charging buyers for products they had not ordered.

You buy security software to be safe, right? So it's a good ides to delete Ad-Aware if you have it.

    Thank you, Vince53.

Since I have not used AAW in many, many years, I think it is best if I refrain from commenting on its effectiveness.
