In my host Win 7 OS, I use MSE for real-time and Malwarebytes (free edition) for on-demand.

In Win 8, Windows Defender is MSE.
So, do I need another anti-virus program, or do I just install Malwarebytes free edition for on-demand ?
If I do need an AV, will Avast free edition be compatible with Win 8 ?
I do mean Avast free edition, not the paid version.

Hi there

Why bother with Malwarebytes any more.

Windows defender (W8 version) will scan anytime you want it to whether "Manually" or by automatic scheduling.

Screenshot enclosed. choose the Settings to arrange automatic scans.

(Go to Control panel double click Windows defender). To get control panel in W8 via standard method == charms bar settings and it's at the top.

Things like FREE 3rd party AV software really are NOT necessary any more -- I'm not against 3rd party products but who better knows the INTERNAL KERNEL of the OS better than the people who make it i.e MS --also they can react quickly to new virus threats and push out updates with the normal windows update mechanism.

I don't expect TOO many of these firms will exist for too much longer --especially for supplying to the HOME PC market.

Corporate and Militiary strength protection is something else.

Also the FREE version of Malwarebytes comes with a caveat -- they will always want you to get the "PRO" (i.e PAY FOR) version which has "SUPER DOOPER MEGA FEATURES" in it -- so can you even be sure that the same sort of effort is spent on the freedbie compared with the commercial product.

W8 with Windows defender and the forthcoming public releases of IE10 and IE11 have changed the whole "security" game on home PC's. Ms is definitely also making sure as many of the Windows defender real time protection mechanisms are built in to I.E10 / I.E 11 as well instead of "post execution" analysis.

Honestly guys W8 with Windows defender will be about as secure as it can get -- nothing is 100% secure but it uses almost ZERO resources and will be just as good (or bad depending on your view) as anybody else's product and it's a lot easier to manage --runs and updates seamlessly with the OS.

It's a TOTALLY different ball game to previous Windows releases where older mechanisms still need to be used.

Cheers

MSE (Windows Defender in W8) does detect rootkits;

Microsoft Security Essentials - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is an antivirus that provides protection against different types of malware such as computer virus, spyware, rootkits and Trojan horses.

Also;

Later on October that year, AV-Test.org conducted a series of trials on the officially released version of the product in which Microsoft Security Essentials detected and caught 98.44 percent of 545,034 computer viruses, computer worms and software Trojan horses as well as 90.95 percent of 14,222 spyware and adware samples. It also detected and eliminated all 25 tested rootkits. Microsoft Security Essentials generated no false-positives at all.

I stand corrected :D . Does the Win7 version also detect rootkits?

We'll have to take a negative on that one, Folks. Microsoft Security Essentials detects root kits, but will not run on Windows 8. Windows Defender gets rid of spyware, and the Windows 8 version also contains an anti-virus. but I can find no mention of it getting rid of root kits.

Windows Defender is MSE in Windows 8, hence why they had the hard block on MSE. So in W8 you get MSE + original Defender in one package for anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware.

???? Pourquoi Warum why ????

Windows defender can scan any time you want it to --just go into control panel, double click windows defender and then you'll see a screen almost identical to the old MSE one. Just choose SCAN now !!!!!

Forget 3rd party av software these days with W8 for HOME computers --waste of money now. (Corporates --another story of course).

I don't run, will not run Norton on any of my systems. It causes too many problems
Avoid AVG like the plague it is.
Eset when license is up to date is not bad, but have not looked at it in a long time

Will run MSE anytime, and it never hurts to run a Malwarebytes Scan every so often.
Even if it is not needed, no single AV-Malware detector will detect everything or catch everything 100% of the time.
So, running Malwarebytes as a manual scan, is not a bad idea at all.

First of all why would you want an outside sourced program that will never be as good as microsoft security essentials ? In windows 7 MSE scored almost as well on the av 100 as did eset and eset has won more than anyone in the entire industry windows defender and microsoft security essentials has been combined I am not saying that it is the utmost perfect but it is damn close

A/v choice is a personal thing.

BTW a/v scores vary a lot depending on which report you read.

MSE did badly in the recent pcpro tests. They concluded it was better than nothing - but other free a/v solutions are much better still.

Yes and I read that too but they did their test conviently when MS databasses were not ready AV is the next biggest industry and why would anyone want ms to have good public results ? And eset is free and has been great for so long, now they don't seem so good with bloat

Tepid, I'm with you on Norton AV. I used to love it, but they began planting programs that would interfere with other AVs, even after Norton was deleted. But as long as you keep account numbers off your computer, Defender is fine for the job.

adamus - You can not install MSE on Win 8 cause it is already included by default. Win8 MSE is Windows Defender.
