Problems with turning off Windows Firewall

Hello,

I do not seem to be able to turn off Windows Firewall on Windows 8. At least, I can turn it off, but then Network detection automatically switches on. I would like to turn both network detection and windows firewall off, but I cannot seem to find the reason why that is not possible.

I have a third party firewall installed, that I why I don't want Windows Firewall to be enabled. I first thought that perhaps my other Firewall was the reason that network detection automatically switches on, so I tried to uninstall my firewall, and then I tried to turn off windows firewall, but then network detection switches on again. If I turn network detection off again then windows firewall turns on again.

So either I turn off windows firewall and network detection switches on, or I turn off network detection and windows firewall turns on. I would like to disable both and only turn on my third party firewall. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

First off what third party firewall do you have ? Windows Firewall does not really get turned off when install another. What exactly mean by Network detection in Windows 8 ? Mean Network discovery ? Enable or disable network discovery - Windows Help

Shown here by my system with Internet security suite, options to turn off Windows Firewall are darkened and do not work, go to services.msc notice for me still running, believe like a double security way it works.

Hello jds63,

It looks like your Windows Firewall is turned off, not on. Else the icons would be green, not red.

I did mean network discovery, yes. Sorry for saying it incorrectly. Does your windows firewall go back on again when you turn network discovery off?

I read everywhere on the internet that you should not run two firewalls at the same time. Also, when both are enabled, the shields up test at https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 always fails. One of my service ports is always visible (closed but visible). If only one of my firewalls is enabled then all service ports are invisible and thus the test succeeds.

True, but in services still is running, like other member said ways of turning it off in services. Same with Network discovery, not sure i never tried to turn it off to see. True 2 Firewalls will conflict, but i am not sure, but think with Windows Firewall it works with it somehow i maybe wrong. As other member mentioned place to check for network settings.

Never listed Firewall you are using, does you Firewall image look like mine that i posted ?

I'm running Bitdefender Internet Security 2015. According to what I read on the web Bitdefender is not supposed to run alongside another firewall. Only one of the two should be enabled.

One more question, is turning off windows firewall in services a good idea? Won't that turn off features that aren't supposed to be turned off? At least, this is what Microsoft says about it:

Do not disable Windows Firewall by stopping the service. Instead, use one of the preceding procedures (or an equivalent Group Policy setting) to turn the firewall off. If you turn off the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security service, you lose other benefits provided by the service, such as the ability to use Internet Protocol security (IPsec) connection security rules, Windows Service Hardening, and network protection from attacks that employ network fingerprinting. For more information about Windows Service Hardening, seeWindows Vista Security and Data Protection Improvements. Non-Microsoft firewall software that is compatible with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 can programmatically disable only the parts of Windows Firewall with Advanced Security that need to be disabled for compatibility. You should not disable the firewall yourself for this purpose. Stopping the service associated with Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is not supported by Microsoft.

I do not know that much about this, although it is stating Windows Vista and Sever 2008, not Windows 8.1,but may well be same.
Is there or are you having a conflict with having both on ? From my pic it showed it was not being used, but in my services it is running as i wrote.

What do you see in the control panel under firewall ? What i believe some suites will not use it, but keep it running, as said in article reasons for it to be that way is all i can tell you since my knowledge on this is not so great. What are your reasons to need to turn off network discovery ?
