Help, please! I can't afford a virus program and I badly need a recommendation for a FREE program

that will do the job, (without all the bells and whistles). I tried AVG and it was one of those "free for 30 days'

nightmares with many add ons and problems. Help appreciated. Using Win 8.1.

comodo is free and its also internet security go to this website and download it and u have for life a free internet security https://www.comodo.com/home/interne...72&key1sk1=dt&key1sk2=https://www.comodo.com/
X2 Comodo will provide much better protection. Test antivirus software for Windows 7 - August 2014 | AV-TEST

I would take these "AV testing" sites with a grain of salt, since it's obvious that a lot of these testing sites get paid to give good reviews and ratings.

Not the first time and certainly won't be the last.

You don't have to take their word for it. Youtube if full of people that do real world testing, MSE / Defender usually does quite poorly. Comodo usually does quite well. MSE is usually more than enough for the average person however I would not put it in the same class as Comodo.
