F5 selection in Startup Settings W8.1 not resonding

I have the FBI Ransomware Ukash virus on my system and trying to run the BitDefender removal tool. I have gone into Advanced boot options and selected Startup Settings and restart. The menu appears listing all the startup options and I need to select 5 (F5) Safe Mode with Networking. The system does not respond to the USB keyboard at all and eventually reboots into Windows normally where the virus captures the display.

Is there any other way to boot to Safe Mode with Networking? Why does the system not respond to the keyboard?
Shift F8 on boot does not work.

Check this article. Do not be locked in with BitDefender. Also, try F12.

Kaspersky nearly worked as it did allow the system to boot but the scan didn't find the virus. Unfortunately the virus has won and the system will be re-imaged - loss of two months e-mails unfortunately. I did actually beat the virus in startup timing and put the system to boot into safe mode via msconfig but this just sent the PC into a loop of constantly restarting. That was the final straw.

Kaspersky did allow me to copy my other data files onto a USB key so those were retained.

You would think Microsoft would put the Safe Mode utility into a protected format so it can always be accessed. The virus hijacked the old F8 boot options and that was the end of me.

    Thanks again for the suggestions.
