I would not let Norton Security pass by me down my street, let alone in my computer, seems to crash a lot of things and make compatible things incompatible with it.

Just remembered something, which Malwarebytes do you have ? free version is NOT resident, payed version IS and should not be used with other AVs.

Hi countmike

Have free Malwarebyte and paid Norton and have had Norton for 5+ years and as they improve it so it seems to play up, question is whats a good alternative? read so much on here about security software and there seems to be no definitive answer.

You'll never find a definitive answer to that, so many opinions, tests with many outcomes and preferences. Best thing is to use what is enough for your stile of work and internet habits. Most of the time free versions of AV are quite enough for home use. Any extra features do not do anything if you don't have them on your computer, like many networked computers etc. At the end, no AV or combination of them can save you if you insist on not being careful. Even great corporations, even AV makers fall a victim to malware sometimes, so what's left for us mere humans ?

Well if you have paid for it, you should use it, no need to waste your money.

Not sure if the free version of malwarebytes has access to real time protection, but it's an option that can conflict with AVs' own real time scanner so you should disable it. You can always do your own manual scans frequently. There might also be specific files to exclude in the scanner when both applications are active. You should check malwarebytes and norton's forums for that, I'm sure they'll have more info.

And I agree with CountMike, the Best AV in the world is the User. Don't download/execute something you are not sure of. On my own PCs I have only ONCE had a virus, it was on a PC XT (8086) with DOS 4 installed iirc, can't even remember if it had a harddrive. I got it from a pirated copy of Turbo Pascal (well I was a kid, and already a geek). It was a good lesson. Ever since not a single virus or anything malicious. I never bought any AVs, and right now I'm using the built-in one from Windows 8... So yeah...

Not sure if the free version of malwarebytes has access to real time protection..

Only the paid version has real time protection.

I personally use MBAM Premium and Windows Defender, adequate for me. I practice safe surfing, with all the new viruses coming out every day, you can be hit at anytime so pay attention.

I think I`ll eventually change from Norton once I`ve found one that suits my needs.

Once again thanks all.

Worst beef I have with Norton and whole house is that it's worse than NSA with it's constant spying and two way conversation with their system and very difficult to get rid of.
