Samba Server?

I'm in the process of migrating to Windows 8.1. I just ran Belarc Advisor and in the "Network Map" section it shows my router with Device Role "Gateway" and that's fine, but then it shows my PC with Device Role "Samba Server". I did not install any server software, is my PC acting as a server? How can I disable this so called "Samba Server" (no idea what it is anyway). Thanks

Samba allows file exchange between Windows and Linux over the network. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the info, I checked the Network Adapters' Protocols and nothing related to "Samba", I also checked the Windows Services and nothing related either. Shouldn't this be an option and not something that one is forced to accept? I'd like my PC to act as a regular LAN client and not a server of any kind.

I think Belarc Advisor is misdetecting it. If you have no samba network service running, then it's not running. Try a different system info tool. Maybe LookInMyPC

It's free.

Microsoft implements file sharing using something called Server Message Blocks, (SMB). The open source implementation for Linux/Unix systems to participate in this type of networking is called Samba. This freely allows these clients to file and print servers made available via SMB/CIFS.

Your tool is misreading your OS and believing it can share files with windows machines via SMB. The misread is that the OS is actually Windows and is doing native SMB.

Nothing to worry about.

Thanks MilesAhead and pparks1 for the reassurance. My concern was that in Windows 7x64 Belarc reports my PC acting as a regular workstation (LAN client), whereas in Windows 8x64 it reports the PC acting as a Samba Server. I read about the Microsoft SMB protocol to do file/printer sharing. There's a Windows 8x64 service not present in Windows 7x64 called "SMB" or something like that, I will test if disabling that service makes Belarc report my PC as a LAN client like in WIn7. Just as a test only, I'll keep it enabled as it may cripple the file and printer sharing capability.
