Solved Windows Defender notification area icon ?

I'm helping someone that just bought a Lenovo laptop with Win 8.1

I uninstalled the pre-installed McAfee anti-virus with:
- Uninstall McAfee in Programs and features
- Reboot
- Run the MCPR McAfee uninstall utility
- Reboot (many times)

With that Windows Defender shows it is running, but there is no Icon in the notification area.
Should there be an Icon in the Win 8 notification area, like Security Essentials in Win 7?

Windows Defender is not in the Customize list.

Some other info, in case it helps:

I manually turned off, then turned on WD realtime protection and that didn't help with this.

I did install http://www.eightforums.com/software-apps/5437-classic-shell-windows-8-a.html

I turned off all startup programs in msconfig except a Lenovo power manager utility and Classic Shell.
Before I turned them off the laptop had apx. 100 processes running at startup.
Now there are apx. 70 processes running at startup.

Maybe you need to turn Defender on & restart the computer.

No, it's not listed in startup, but it shows as running from what I saw.
I know WD is built into Win 8, whereas MS Security Essentials is an optional installed program in Win 7...

To clarify, after I uninstalled McAfee, WD was re-enabled without me manually doing that ...
It seems the McAfee uninstall process automatically re-enabled WD.

Ah, that looks like what might be causing this !
I'll check the setting that way next time I connect to her laptop.
Great find on that link/info ;) +1

Thanks David!

Windows Defender does not show a specific icon in the tray, warnings will show as an overlay on the Action Center flag. Make sure you have all security warnings enabled in 'Action Center Settings'.

This seems to explain how WD works in Win 8 from what I see!
Thanks to everyone for helping with this.
