The Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO) has developed a suite of 5 tests to ensure your antivirus solution is providing optimum protection.

A free AV program should pass all 5 tests.

You can test your Anti Virus program here:

Feature Settings Check

This should become an interesting thread.

I use Avast, paid version.
It passed all 5 tests. :)

The free version of Avast will pass all 5 tests too.

The only problem is test #3.

You need to set up the PUPs feature, since it is not on by default.
Go to these three places to activate the scan for unwanted PUPs feature:

Settings> Active Protection> File system Shield> (click the cog wheel)> Sensitivity> tick the Scan for Potentially Unwanted PUPs box.
Settings> Active Protection> Mail Shield> (click the cog wheel)> Sensitivity> tick the Scan for Potentially Unwanted PUPs box.
Settings> Active Protection> Web Shield> (click the cog wheel)> Sensitivity> tick the Scan for Potentially Unwanted PUPs box.
{I am grateful to my2cents for helping with this.}

A picture:

avast.jpg

After doing those 3 things, when you take test #3, you should see something similar to this:

I was hoping people would post the results of their tests with their AV programs.

Good morning, David. :) This is good stuff. Thanks for posting it. :thumb:

I'm anxious to see how Defender fairs with this. I'll download, install, and run this after my morning coffee and forum rounds.

I thought it was a pretty good idea too.

It may help prevent someone from getting a virus. :)

I just ran a few tests using Bitdefender Total Security 2014. The results are as follows..

1) Autopilot Mode
2) User Mode
3) Maximum Settings

All tests produced the same result.

Personally, I would not use any vendor's protection test script or rely on their analysis of same either. Why? Because they have too much to gain by showing your (ahem...) current vulnerabilities. In fact, the results might want to make you run and switch to Comodo or Bitdefender real quick; yes? Maybe even invest in a Pro version too! Now, on the other side, AMTSO gets paid by all participating vendors to conduct their independent testing. So, there is no possible "conflict of interest" to stop them from providing you with reliable (and unbiased) test results.

I agree with what your saying, however I have used this tool on multiple installations and can vouch for the fact that they are accurate. Plus, the free version Comodo has to offer will infact protect you from most if not all the vulnerabilities tested.

Edit: Additionally, I see nothing wrong with asking to pay for a product which in return will provide you with better security. The time & resources needed to create a product needs to be compensated somehow.

Please go here to learn more about independent (and impartial) leak testing:

Introduction to Firewall Leak-testing - www.matousec.com

They even provide independent test results based on their test criteria as well.

So, what's the difference between the AMTSO tests and (let's say) your Comodo tests?

The AMTSO tests are basically design to make sure you can keep malware from ever becoming resident on your PC; whereas, leak tests are designed to make sure that if you contract malware, it gets isolated and never has the chance to go outbound from your PC. So, my logic is that if it passes all 5 AMTSO tests, it can't get in so why do I have to worrry about it ever getting out? Please understand that I am not downplaying that added protection; however, it usually comes with a price in slower performance and increased resource utilization (eg, CPU occupancy). Moreover, I have tried several of those "learning firewalls" in the past and I really grew tired of "educating those programs" to my usual habits. Armour and Comodo were the worst way back when but things may have improved by now. Anyway, to each their own; however, for me (and my surfing habits), Avast 2014 and the standard Windows firewall is all I need to protect my PC. BTW, I have never been infected so that's why I never participate in any malware removal discussions. I have no experience in that area.

Good luck to all when making a decision regarding how much protection they really need.

Ok, then I can assume it passes all 5 AMTSO tests; yes?
