The Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO) has developed a suite of 5 tests to ensure your antivirus solution is providing optimum protection.
A free AV program should pass all 5 tests.
You can test your Anti Virus program here:
Feature Settings Check
This should become an interesting thread.
I use Avast, paid version.
It passed all 5 tests.
The free version of Avast will pass all 5 tests too.
The only problem is test #3.
You need to set up the PUPs feature, since it is not on by default.
Go to these three places to activate the scan for unwanted PUPs feature:
Settings> Active Protection> File system Shield> (click the cog wheel)> Sensitivity> tick the Scan for Potentially Unwanted PUPs box.
Settings> Active Protection> Mail Shield> (click the cog wheel)> Sensitivity> tick the Scan for Potentially Unwanted PUPs box.
Settings> Active Protection> Web Shield> (click the cog wheel)> Sensitivity> tick the Scan for Potentially Unwanted PUPs box.
{I am grateful to my2cents for helping with this.}

After doing those 3 things, when you take test #3, you should see something similar to this:
