Solved Wanting to use a password like root.

Currently when I do something like lets say install a piece of software the system prompt's me if I want to allow this and I respond buy pushing either "yes" or "no". Is it possible to have Windows 8.1 work like Unix with instead of me pushing a "yes" or "no" I would type in my password? If so could you tell me how or point me to a guide you recommend.

It's for Windows 7 but I would think the same principles apply to 8 as well.

One way to do will be to create a user with limited access.

For example you can have one user who has administrator privileges and then a user without who only has standard user privileges.

Press :winkey: + X
Click "Computer Management"
right Click "Local Users and groups", click "New User"


Fill in the desired Information, click "Create"


This will then add the user to the group "User":


Now if you log off your admin account and log in with this account you will find you will be prompted for an admin password. For example opening an elevated Command prompt:



That is one way to do it.

Hey DM,

If you like, you could use either option in the tutorial below to set to have UAC ask administrators for a password instead of yes/no. Standard users are prompted to enter an administrator's password by default, so there's nothing needed to be changed for that.
