Deleted Kaspersky & Say No to Norton

I have been using Kaspersky for about 4-5 years up to now, but recently deleted it and opened up Wiundows Defender, a better variant of Microsoft Security Essentials. I was paying for Kaspersky Internet Suite and it never, ever showed me one result.

My grandson plays games online and they were checked by me but occasionally he would click on another and cause a 'bug' to come down the line. Spent a while cleaning them out too!!

Anyway, Defender up and running, grandson on the pc, and he clicked on one of these 'other offers' and immediately Defender came up and told me 'oh no your not, its bugged!!'

So bye bye Kaspersky, you never worked.

as for a recent question in here about whether to use McAfee or Norton. When I bought my pc; the first thing I did was uninstall Norton, same for two laptops. Norton is VERY heavy software to use and is takes over such a large amount of the relevant system. Not only that but not many people know but it plants a spyware software hidden in the symantec folder which is NOT deleted on uninstall. but it can be manually deleted if you know its there. norton then continue to monitor your usage even when its not in the computer.

I would run from McAfee as fast as you can, almost the same with Norton but not as fast. Give a chance to Avast, AVG or Bitdeffender, there's free version of all of them, so you do not risk much. Personally, I am quite satisfied with Avast Free.

Actually McAfee (soon to be renamed Intel Security) scores quite highly in most of the latest ratings. Norton is good too as is Kaspersky. But many people castigate either one for being too top-heavy as they provide a suite of tools for your use. Always read the System Requirements of any software before buying it. The free ones mentioned earlier tend not to provide complete protection so be careful choosing those. Often it will be only an anti-virus meaning you need something else as a firewall etc. I'm not saying they're bad, but you have to be careful to choose wisely.

It's a personal choice but you should know that no anti-virus, no matter what brand, is 100% guaranteed to stop everything out there. Arm your browsers with their own security - SiteAdvisor or WoT for instance and keep extra anti-malware software handy and updated just in case, such as Malwarebytes Free, SpywareBlaster, SuperAntiSpyware Free etc. etc. Remember the first weapon Windows has against infection is Safe Mode, where you can often initiate System Restore to save the day.
I Moderate for McAfee so people often accuse me of bias, but they don't pay me. It's because I started with them through my ISP years ago and simply kept going.

Above all, always keep your operating system and browsers, all of them, updated, surf wisely and avoid file-sharing if at all possible.

I believe McAfee was first AV or one of first ones anyway. It was first one I ever used long, long time ago. After a while more and more other ones showed up and McAfee fell behind and at the end the main guy went coo coo. I don't know if anything changed lately but by comments all over the place I guess not.
Peter Norton was hailed as a genius but after fiasco with stuff for Win95 everything changed. Nowadays Norton products are too difficult to use for most and even more difficult to uninstall and get rid of. In this last group, some programs that used to be practically a standard, like Nero and Adobe Reader managed to do the same so they are definitely out of my list for use and to recommend.
Kasperski is just too much for average user I believe and definitely not for weaker machines. .
I know that ratings for AVs change all the time and also by who ever tests them, but can't go changing them all the time according to that.

Thanks elbmek. I forgot that when uninstalling Norton you have to go into the registry to uninstall All to do with Symantic/Norton. My latest laptop came with Norton pre-installed. All completely gone now.

Sorry elbmek, I spelt your name wrong.

John McAfee is cuckoo as everyone knows and has nothing to do with the company any more thank God. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel now who wish to divorce themselves from that name a.s.a.p.. As I said, they (& Norton etc.) are highly rated no matter what anyone says.

They are NOT difficult to remove at all. Only people who have messed with their registry, whether intentionally through registry cleaners, or unintentionally via infection, seem to continually have problems in that regard. Yes we all know that John McAfee made a famous YouTube video of his struggle to uninstall the software. Surprising that he bit the hand that fed him all these years & considering he made millions out of the sale and even more surprising when things like that could ruin the value of his stock options, assuming he still has them. Although I doubt he has those holdings anyway as he's apparently spent most of his fortune on loose living and recreational drugs.

Thanks elbnek. I forgot that when uninstalling Norton you have to go into the registry to uninstall All to do with Symantic/Norton. My latest laptop came with Norton pre-installed. All completely gone now.

Regarding removal of any security software, always use the regular Control Panel method, which decrements the online account by 1 license, followed by the removal tool that is provided by most of the makers of security software worldwide, which cleans out the registry for you.

I learnt the hard way, back in Windows 95 and up, remove software through Control Panel, Programs and Features then Uninstall. As elbmek said, some programs leave a bit if not a lot behind in the Registry. I found quite a bit!

Everyone obviously has their own preferences. But MSE in Win 7 has so far not failed me so it stays. Defender in 8 and 8.1 is still unproven but MS say that it is actually BETTER than MSE and therefore MSE is not avail for the latest two Win versions. My pc is not running 100% but is stil better now I have removed the major offenders.

Incidently, if anybody tries to run Defender and keeps getting the message that its switched off, it could be Adaware. It was, in mine. I also have Malwarebytes installed which does not interfer with Defender.

For me, Revo uninstaller does the best job of uninstalling and cleaning up after, but AVs can be a bit tricky because they are made to resist being shut down, immobilized or uninstalled unless it's service and autorun is shut down first. Avast for instance has utility for uninstallation that works even when something goes wrong and can't be done usual way. "Avast Software Uninstall Utility"
There's also for AVG "AVG remover", " McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool", "Norton Antivirus Rnav" etc.
In short, going about uninstallation thru windows uninstaller leaves most of crap behind that has to be cleaned manually or thru some other program. Going thru Control Panel, Programs and Features rely on particular program uninstaller and a lot of programs and most AVs like to leave a reminder that they were there, which is very tedious to clean up after.

on the subject of uninstallers Iobit Uninstaller is excellent, and even does a power scan of the registry to remove all which the program deliberately leaves behind.

Is this turning into "I know more than you do :p ". Shall we leave it at that? Everybody has their own personal taste at whatever software they run on their own personal computers. This thread started out friendly and instructive, from a forum member telling us what he found and what he removed and is happy with. I know I made a few 'fubars' in my first reply but remembering something very awful that happened in my family got to me. Sorry for that.

No, its not turning out into that at all. The idea is to help! And a suggestion here and there is very welcome, I know I have used help on more than a thousand or so occasions. What one person knows is the answer to another persons question. Thats called passage of information.

Looks like I have got it wrong "Again  " I have had a bad week. I am standing in the corner and writing out 100 times, I must not jump to conclusions, I must not jump to conclusions.............. As you say this is the place for help with Win 8 & 8.1. Windows 7 Forum for Win 7, the amount of help I have received from a lot of people has been gratefully received. Perhaps I better take some 'Chill-out' pills. :zip:

I used the Norton AV on personal computers in the past, but had a lot of difficulty both trying to use it and then even more removing it. I remember using the 'Norton Removal Tool' in 2007 but there were many artifacts of the Symantec/Norton stuff laying around. I have been using Avast with good luck, both on my Vista machine from 2007 to just recently, and now am using Avast with my new HP Envy desktop with Windows 8.1. Over the years, Avast has flagged many suspicious and potentially malicious pieces of software in emails or websites. I also scan from time to time with Malwarebytes. Guess I am going with what I am used to.

I was very apprehensive of third party uninstallers but after reading several reviews I am trying out VS Revo Uninstaller Pro. I like the layout start panel and the idea of seeing each individual program. I will get back to the forum, (lets hope I don't wipe anything out that's important), and let you know how I get on.

There you go, I always liked using third party programs instead of Windows supplied ones because Windows ones are just basic and do not do as much as most of freeware ones.
When using VS Revo Uninstaller you have 3 settings (Safe, Moderate and Advanced) for cleaning after programs so you can choose how aggressive it will be. After years of using it I have not had any problems because of it even as I always use Advanced mode. There is also a free version of Revo so you can try it first. The only difference is that Pro version has more cleaning utilities for which I do not have much use.

I did have Iobit Uninstaller, on my main pc. Used VS Revo and got rid of it all, I like it, :) and when I get used to Revo I will try the advanced method. I remember using another uninstaller a few years ago, and wiped out most of my games and saved levels, Twit  (me) and since then became apprehensive. Still with this Forum, if I c*** anything up I can always ask for help, I hope. Now to do some reading on how to use VS Revo Uninstaller, properly.
