Hi, I recently got a computer for christmas, and when I try to turn on McCafe or whatever it is, it won't let me, and windows defender for some reason is off, along with McCafe being set to "snoozing"

Literally came out of nowhere, I haven't downloaded anything other than Google Chrome.

Any help?

Windows Defender is turned off because McAfee is managing your security settings. I would suggest you remove it. Avast is a much better alternative and it's free.

McAfee AKA McFubar has been shown to cause many problems with PC's. Peruse the Seven Forums & you will find many posts about problems caused by McAfee. It takes a draconian approach to managing your system & does slow it down. I've seen lots of problems it caused on machines I dealt with

Granted, most AV's do slow down a system, the amount of slowdown varies with each one. However your primary concern should be on security & not speed. A fast PC won't be much good if it gets infected or has problems caused by the AV itself.

The link below will give you information on the various AV's & their pros/cons.

If you wish to keep McAfee, you should go to the company's site & see if you can find information on the controls.

If you wish to remove it, you can find the removal tool here

Also, just to be on the safe side, d/l & run Malwarebytes. Get the free version, install it & run a full system scan. If it finds anything, be sure to check the boxes of what it finds & quarantine it. Malwarebytes is an on-demand scanner.
