I think my win 8 has a virus.
When you start up it will get passed the win 8 bootup screen into where it will log you in (i have set it so it will auto log me on), this process takes 2-3 mins. It will show the desktop for 30 secs then shows a blank green screen where it shows the mouse loading image. Its been around 20mins and still the same.

I have done a system restore, it completed sucessfully but it obviously hasnt removed the virus

What can i do

During an "upgrade" installation, windows keeps a copy of the old OS so your files should be safe. Microsoft confirms it, check here : Update to Windows 8.1: FAQ - Microsoft Windows Help (and click will I be able to keep my files...) and here Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Upgrade Paths

Another solution is to dowload and install a live cd : List of live CDs I generally use Knoppix, this is linux based. If you're more comfortable with windows you can try Ultimate Boot CD for Windows . You'll be able to boot from it and copy/move any files you want to save to a safe location.

But your problem might not be related to a virus, it could be related to a driver missing, a recently installed application which is incompatible, or maybe a botched update. Try starting in safe mode to see if it helps : How To Start Windows 8 or 8.1 in Safe Mode

Are your specs current in your profile ? (Win 8 RTM, 1GB Ram, Atom processor)

Please confirm your specs to include your AV scan results, and apps/additional software.

Does your Antivirus detect virus ? Scan with malwarebytes.org as a 3rd party AV.

Also, have you tried to disable the auto logon and go with a normal log on ?

Most viruses nowadays embed themselves in the 1st restore point. You could try rolling back to the 2nd or 3rd restore point before the problems started.

D/L & run the following scanners & post the results.

Malwarebytes (The Free Version)

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

TDSSKiller (To rule out the possibility of a rootkit)
