Bizarre Repeated Win Defender Update - Same One Over & Over

I just reinstalled Win 8 in an Oracle VM and it keeps wanting to install exactly the same update over and over again. I've checked the system clock, it's OK. I've never come across this particular quirk before.

    Ideas anyone?

Well it's still offering it even after 2 reboots so have no idea what's going on here. I'll do some research.

I was reading online that this could be normal behaviour as security updates for the antivirus side of Defender could be all carrying the same KB number but be actually incremental DAT updates. I hope that's the case because the only way to stop them otherwise is turn of Windows Defender altogether which would entail installing another antivirus. I'll give it a few days to see what happens.

Indeed, Peter, that's exactly what is happening. No worries ...

A rather bizarre way of going about it though don't you think? I would expect antivirus updates perhaps once a day, and, if there are a bunch of cumulative ones, why not lump them all together? Very odd.

I dunno, as long as Defender remains updated, I'm happy.

Well a new update seems to have stopped the cycle but as you can see by the attached pic I had reason to be concerned.

Yeah, that happened to me early on, too.

I even had one or two that failed:
