Solved Auto Maintenance and Defender

I have set Defender to do a quick scan in task scheduler for 1 AM. Auto Maintenance is set for 3 AM. I got up this morning to check Defender to verify the newly created quick scan and it was successful but stated it ran at 3 AM. Since I have allowed system to 'wake up' from sleep to do the quick scan, I am afraid the laptop is being awakened at both 1 AM by task scheduler and 3 AM by Auto Maintenance. Any ideas or should I leave this alone?
It runs as part of Automatic Maintenance, which IIRC runs daily when your computer is idle.

Windows Defender to Scan on a Shedule

Shawn, although your article was very well done and helpful to most, I now realize that Automatic Maintenance already does a Quick Scan at 3:00 AM. I created a detailed task setting up Triggers, Actions and such for it take wake at 2:00 AM to do a Quick Scan. This is redundant. I need help to disable this newly created task and return to normal. Also, I don't know if this matters but I never wrapped the default path in quotes under program/script. It still runs a Quick Scan at 2:00 AM like I set it though. Please help me delete this creation without deleting the system command that had Defender do a Quick Scan as part of Automatic Maintenance.

Thanks,

Joe

Hey, things seem to have worked. I deleted new trigger and action and the task for Windows Defender is back to its original state. Whew! Thanks:D I will post back tomorrow if all goes well.

Well, mixed results. I woke up at 3 this morning to watch laptop Auto Maintenance activity. Laptop plugged in and in sleep mode. At 3:02 the screen showed color for the first time. The log-on screen was visible. It quickly went back to dark and things were seemingly done. I went in control panel/action center/maintenance and saw the setting in which I have chosen for it to run, 3:00 AM. Since it was set the way I wanted, I went to see when it ran this morning. I expected to see 3:00 AM or something very close. I only saw that it ran at 7:45 PM last night. Hmm? I restarted the computer about 3:15 AM and checked again to see if Auto Maintenance had a different run time other than last night. No change. I put the unit to sleep and went back to bed. In the morning I got up and checked again to find that Auto Maintenance ran at 3:17 AM and 3:34 AM. That is weird. I have Auto M set up to wake up my computer. Why did it not show having run at 3:00 AM or a few minutes after? Finally, I went into Task Scheduler to check on Windows Defender b/c that runs along with Auto Maintenance. It showed in the middle pane of the Scheduler "The last run of the task was terminated by user (0 x 41306) What is the last run. I know there are 4 individual tasks associated with Defender in the Scheduler. Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, that's why I like to have a separate task scheduled to run when nothing else is scheduled to run instead to help prevent it from being possibly terminated.

Yesterday, Auto Maintenance had 4 activities logged when I went to Control Panel and Checked Action Center. It ran at 3:17 AM, 3:34 AM, 7:31 AM, and 5:59 PM. Is this normal? Can anyone here verify there run times. Does anyone actually have Auto Maintenance set to 3:00 AM default and actually see that time verified when they check action center Auto Maintenance run time?

You mean computer wakes up, wakes me up at 3:00 AM in the morning? No way. I leave that disabled. :)
But yes the auto maintenance has something default at 3:00AM but never checked the pc at that time.
I might not be the right answer here since my computer is shut down at 3:00AM and it doesn't turn on by itself.

I rather run a scan manually myself daily or once a week but maintenance also kicks in every now and then when the computer is on and idle.

I have auto maintenance set to run, but not allowed to wake the PC.

If the auto maintenance task failed to run at the scheduled time, then it's normal for it to try again later or run as soon as it's able. That would account for the different times that it runs at despite being set to the default 3AM time.

You could manually start and stop auto maintenance at anytime as well.
As for Windows Defender, I personally like to also manually run a scan whenever I like.

Thanks for your input. In my reading and viewing Youtube on the Internet I understand that I need to stay logged in to my laptop. One writer and another Youtube video said that if I shutdown the laptop, I need to stay logged in. Is that true? I have been logging out to sleep or to shut down in the past. Perhaps that is affecting my default 3:00 AM Auto Maintenance scan. The scan seem to want to run when I awake or turn on the computer AND log in during morning time.

Here are my power options. Should I allow Auto Maintenance to access my computer without a password? I understand by a few sources that I need to NOT log out when putting to sleep or shutting down in order to enable Auto M to do its thing.

It doesn't matter since it runs as the system and not a user.

As long as your PC is running or is set to be woken up when automatic maintenance is scheduled to run, then it'll run whether a user is logged in or not.

If the PC is in use or not powered on or running at the scheduled time, then it will try to run automatically later.

Boooooya!!!:) It really worked. I didn't mean to post power consumption pic at the end but this is awesome. I'm trying to see what actually changed things but for right now my computer seems set. Auto Maintenenance ran at 3:15 AM today while laptop was plugged in and on sleep mode. 3:17 AM Windows Defender did a Quick Scan (auto scan). Task Manager was clean and functioning well and Cache, Cleanup, Scheduled Scan (aka 'Auto Scan) and Verification occurred. There is only one thing I did last night but I doubt it was the difference maker, I went into Defender>Advanced and added 'create a system restore point' b/c it had not been checked. Much thanks to all. Now on to the next and here's to more fun in the future.
