Hello WR,

One issue is that you have real-time protection turned off for Windows Defender.
Do you have a 3rd party AV program installed that you are using instead?

If not, then you should turn on real-time protection for Windows Defender.

Afterwards, click on Close for that error, click on the History tab, and see if you are able to clear (remove) your history.

Hope this helps for now, :)
Shawn

A few things to check:

1. Double check in the right pane at the locations below in Group Policy (gpedit) to make sure that they are all set to "Not Configured".

Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Defender

2. Go to the locations below in regedit to see if you have a Windows Defender subkey under Microsoft. If you do, then delete the Windows Defender key, and restart the computer.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft

3. Make sure that the Windows Defender Service is set to Automatic and Started (running).
4. If the Windows Defender Service is missing, or you cannot change the settings for it, then download and merge the .reg file for the listed Windows Defender Service in the tutorial below. Afterwards, restart the computer. This will restore the default registry entries and settings for the Windows Defender Service.

Afterwards see if you are able to turn on real-time protection and clear your history.

Thanks - I had shut off Windows Defender from within the program, but it would nto come back up for me to turn it back on. I don't get why they did it like this.

I checked those policies, but they were "not configured - So I first Enabled "Windows Defender is Shut off" then I disabled it. After that, it popped right up, instead of giving me that worthless "Sorry, this has been shut down" shield with no information on it whatsoever.

I figured, when I shut it off, I could just turn it back on from within the Security Center area of Control Panel. But when I went to do that, there was nothing there. So, this allowed me to fix it.

Hello Leeelson, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Do you have a 3rd party AV program installed?

If so, then that would be why you are unable to turn on Windows Defender. Windows Defender is disabled by default when a 3rd party AV program is installed since it's not recommended to have more than 1 installed or enabled at the same time.

To be safe, do a full scan of your system at boot with Windows Defender Offline to help make sure that your system is clean.

If it comes back clean, then you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to undo and fix it for you.

If you mean refreshing Windows 8, then be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe. After a refresh, you would need to reinstall all desktop programs.

Not quite willing to go that far....yet. After all, this is just real time protection. I can always install a 3rd party program *that works*.

I was talking about trying to restart the Windows Defender Service, accessible by running services.msc. Since I can't touch this service (permissions problem?) it may be an indication of something more fundamental being screwed up.

It sounds like your system may be infected. Were you able to do a full scan of your system at boot with Windows Defender Offline to see what it reports?

You may need to create it on another computer to boot from on your computer if you are unable to create it on your computer.

Try running a scan with the following scanners. They are on-demand scanners. If possible, d/l these on a clean machine to minimize the possibility of corruption.

If you made your copy of WDO on the infected machine, it's a possibility the anti-virus definitions were compromised.

First, run rkill

Do NOT reboot after running it. Then run the following scanners.

Malwarebytes (The free version is good, you can upgrade later if you choose) Do a full system scan. If it finds anything, check the boxes of the items found & quarantine them.

TDSSKiller. This will scan for rootkits.

Norton Power Eraser.

Because Norton Power Eraser uses aggressive methods to detect threats, there is a risk that it can select some legitimate programs for removal. If you accidently remove a legitimate program, you can run Norton Power Eraser to review past repair sessions and undo them.

Please post the results of these scans
