Windows Defender or a different Antivirus?

Windows Defender (Security Essentials) seems to get low ratings in antivirus reviews. Any recommendations for a different free antivirus?

Thanks,

Avast Home! 8
Avira Free 2013
AVG Free 2013

I've been using Avast for quite a long time with no complaints.

I did some Googling on Avast and learned that Avast Free is very highly regarded but requires yearly registration for continued functionality. I noticed a number of posts where users say they are having problems re-registering after not having problems re-registering before. I think I'll bypass Avast because of possible registration issues in the future.

I'll check out Avira and AVG. Thanks for the help,

I have used avast on wife's computer for years without any problems with the yearly registration process.

I use MSE (defender) as I am a very low risk web surfer. It's good enough for me.

Free Antivirus are never good. They are not good that's why they are sold as free. If you want to get an Antivirus to give Best Protection to your PC then I would recommend The following:-

1) Mcafee Total Protection 2013
2) Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security 2013
3) BitDefender Total Security 2013
4) Norton 360 Advanced Protection

These are the 4 Best Antivirus in 2013....... :)

You don't have to pay money for good software. I wouldn't run McAfee if they sponsored me.

One of the other advantages of avast, is that it's highly customizable. I love that you can turn off sounds, pop-ups, shields, etc. As far as the registration goes.......once a year, that's a no-brainer.

Hello,

I am wondering about the advisability of uninstalling the Macafee security system which has total control in my win 8 system and security, to the extent that Windows Defender cannot be activated, Windows Firewall is unchangeably off, managed by Macafee.
How should I go about uninstalling this comprehensive take-over of my new laptop? I think, given my low browsing activity, that
Windows Defender and Firewall should be adequate, to judge from other remarks, and do not like the way my computer's
management has been taken out of my hands.
