Better than Free: With 83% Faster Scanning, Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 Makes Windows 8 Great

inShare. Microsoft gets it. Today, it makes no sense to release an operating system, especially a game-changer like Windows 8, without some form of basic antivirus protection. That’s why Windows 8 comes preloaded with a default form of protection, Windows Defender, that automatically kicks in when the system does not boot up with installed third-party protection.

If you get Defender for free with Windows 8, is there any point to getting any further protection? Yes -- at least 83 to begin with…

The numbers tell a compelling performance story

In side-by-side tests conducted by PassMark, an independent laboratory, Windows 8 with Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 consistently outperformed Windows 8 without it (with Defender as its default). Consider the highlights:

•83% faster scanning: End users spend more time working, less time managing interruptions.

•11% faster boot time, 32% faster applications installation, 39% faster copies, moves and deletes: With Symantec, common computing tasks impose fewer disruptions of real work activity.

•44% less CPU usage, 57% less memory usage than the average security solution. Unlike other antivirus programs, Symantec Endpoint Protection doesn’t degrade operating system performance, it improves it.

•29% more malware threats detection: Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 simply does a better job doing what a protection solution should do – intercept threats before they become digital dangers. Symantec beat Defender by 29%, Trend Micro by 26% and McAfee by 20%.

The difference? A whole new kind of threat detection

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 achieves a different level of performance because it’s based on a different kind of technology. The traditional model of protection – signature-based security – simply cannot keep pace with a hostile landscape that produces an estimated 13 new threats every second.

Symantec has taken a different approach that leverages its Insight database of hundreds of millions of users and files. By ranking files by reputation – not just the “what” of the signature, but the “who” of association – Symantec can assess the relative threat potential of every file. The result is superior protection that reduces scanning overhead by as much as 70 percent, an intelligent defense that accelerates both security and performance.

Perfect together: Mate Windows 8 with Symantec Endpoint Protection 12

We’re the first to applaud Microsoft for recognizing the need for protection. But only Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 leverages “big data” from the cloud, as many as 700 billion submissions from 120 million machines a day, to imbed worldwide intelligence into its system defenses. And only Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 has been awarded a AAA rating from Dennis Labs for the quality of its security.

What’s better than “free”? Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 makes a great operating system even greater, offering not just better malware detection and interception, but an altogether better operating system experience – one that’s faster and more productive.

Step up to the advantages of SEP 12

If you’re already using a previous generation of Symantec Endpoint Protection but you’d like to make your Windows 8 great, download your SEP 12 upgrade here.

Get the complete performance story

If you’re still using some other anti-malware software, download the complete PassMark Test on Performance in Windows 8 Environment here to see how your brand stacked up against Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Over the years, Norton has had a few shaky releases. Especially the ones that you couldn't hardly uninstall when you decided IT was what was causing your problems.

However, since about 2010 or so, the NIS product has been improved greatly and I wouldn't be concerned personally with running it on my machines.

I've been using Avast Home for some years and have no complaint, but I'm seriously considering a paid one for my new build.

Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 ~US$ 55,00 (1-year)

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013 ~US$ 29,00 (1-year)

Avira Professional Security ~US$ 22,00 (1-year)*

* Avira Professional Security includes Avira Premium + Firewall

I would be hesitent to use Kaspersky. I remember that it was quite complex to properly set it up and there are always complaints about it doing strange things.

A few years ago a German PC mag gave away free Kaspersky product keys and had full setup instructions. I used it for a while but then I went back to NIS which I find to be the best suited for my purposes. Watch for NIS sales. Sometimes you can get it for free with a MIR.

Avira I don't know. Never used it.

If I ever went back to a paid anti-virus, at the moment Defender-MSE/Savvy Computer sense (which means you can have the world's best virus protection and still let the apocalypse onto your computer if you're the opposite, an anti-virus isn't an excuse to stop thinking as common sense is the greatest protection), it would never be Nortons or anything by Symantec. Just too many bad experiences, unfortunately since I buy HP computers its trial versions are the first pieces of bloatware I kill with fire.

When I work on someone's PC, especially if it is infected with malware... is to uninstall whatever they were using and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Almost every PC has at least 2 AV programs running and most aren't running up-to-date AV definitions, so all the AV program is doing is using resources and not protecting anything. almost every PC has outdated applications, unpatched applications, outdated drivers and "bloatware". After I tweak Windows and update everything, the PC always runs faster and better. I have yet to find a PC running up-to-date AV (any brand) that is infected with virii, it's usually ransomware, browser hijackings, etc... that's why I recommend MalwareBytes and CCleaner to them...
