When I last checked the Windows Defender software that is bundled with Windows 8 did a pretty good job at detecting and removing malware. I have a Windows 8 tablet and I run Defender on that and haven't came across any troubles. Do bear in mind that their are Anti-viruses and security solutions that in most defiantly do a better job. If your going to run Defender make sure you run a on-demand anti-spyware program such as malwarebytes or super-anti spyware.
