Hello 8bal, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could use the shortcut in the tutorial below and "Pin to Taskbar" with it if you like.

Windows Defender - Create Shortcut in Windows 8

However, I think you might like this option below better.

Windows Defender Cascading Desktop Context Menu - Create in Windows 8

    and

Scan with Windows Defender - Add in Windows 8

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

thanks. I now can open defender easier, but it still doesn't show up bottom right task bar like windows 7 mse did if you customise and show icons and notifications. If defender detects something, will I be notified or does it just correct [or try to] in background

    You're welcome.

Yeah, the notification area icon is gone now for Windows Defender in Windows 8, but Windows Defender will alert you if it detects anything though.

DO you feel this reinvented combo of windows defender and MSEssentials is adequate as an antivirus if you run malwarebytes with it?

    Hello Leslieo,

Windows Defender is adequate on it's own. Adding Malwarebytes free to the mix certainly doesn't hurt though.

I have been using just that in my 7, vista and xp machines i run and work on. I don't like the lack of control the user has in Windows 8. It seems to be leading the user in a dumbed-down experience where trivia and visuals are everything. and the art of computing has been relegated to only those willing to dig deeper and go through more clicks, maybe it's easier for some but it isn't the way I enjoy computers. It irks me when they have to constantly be renaming things when previous terminology was sufficient for the job. Take this Defender, MSE then back to Defender business. Give us a break and then hiding it like it will create great problems if exposed. I think people should interact with their antivirus. . Take charms. They must think we are all leprechauns. Icon is a perfectly tech word. Charms, really? No More solitaire, the most played computer game ever? gone unless you sign up for xbox. Arrogance here. and speaking of arrogance, no start button? The most used feature in all windows. What? people might interact with the function of computing perhaps and see what is under the hood.? And what about Java? I know! HTML5! No plug ins, but Arrogance when 3 billion devices run Java. Lets just cut them out of the equation. And then with the locked bios's; all the overclockers and gamers are quite distressed. And NO COA? How will independent repair shops adapt? It's all about power, and control isn't it, and ultimately money and market? I am disappointed in Microsoft but not surprised. I digress and it is late.
Thank you! I guess I will be doing much looking and reading, and probably buying an X51 ailenware with windows 7 on it next week before they are all gone. On the pro side,8 is faster, maybe safer, and very colorful.
