AVG 2013 for Windows 8

The TOPIC is really saying what it need to say . Is it perfectly compatible with Windows 8

Hi there
I'm confused here

Why ON EARTH would you need to install this -- Windows Defender (built in to the kernel) is 100% good enough for HOME users so why on earth would you need to bother with this stuff on W8.

3rd party AV software for W8 these days is as DEAD as a DODO.

Also it's no point listing various technical journals listing "effectiveness" or "performance" of AV software -- these are ALWAYS at least a FEW WEEKS out of date by the time they are published -- a new attack can be developed at any time and in any case 99.9% of the best protection is not AV software BUT YOU YOURSELF.

I know loads of people who have never had a Virus in over 20 years or more of using computers and who haven't installed any AV software at all. !!

The basic Windows firewall, your own router, HOW YOU USE EMAIL AND THE INTERNET and Windows defender built in to W8 is MORE than enough.

Cheers

Hi there
Again a question to those using this -- we know it RUNS but why bother using it on W8 -- It's 100% REDUNDANT now.

People have said it WORKS -- but nobody has said why they actually NEED this anymore on W8.

Still amazed when you buy a laptop at a Computer store how the sales people are STILL PUSHING NORTON -- I ask them -- Have you actually understood Windows 8 -- it has a GOOD built in security system.

They usually give some sort of B/S --It doesn't have any "Internet" security -- only the O/s.

You have to laugh and walk away at that point. -- Is EDUCATION so bad these days --especially in a technical store specializing in computers.

I despair sometimes.

While your statement does hold water to some extent I can also see what the store associate was trying to get at, even though he / she made themselves sound uneducated in their statement.

The bottom line is that MS has a hard enough time patching security holes in their operating systems so how can we trust them to put out definitions for Defender in a timely manner?
Unless Microsoft suddenly comes out with an iron clad system overnight, I myself cannot bring myself to whole heartedly believe in their security products.

First I should say that I like Windows 8 just fine and have no problem with it what so ever.

BUT!

I never put ANY Microsoft system online without adequate protection.

Is AVG adequate protection? That's a debate I want no part of.

But I just can't 100% trust defender.

I always swear by ESET, Malware bytes and superantispyware.

With those installed my whole house has stayed bug free for years.

That's all I was trying to get at Joel, ANYTHING but Defender. They want us to trust their security products but they cannot keep the holes in the OS closed.
Let the Antivirus companies do what they do and that is put out definitions when viruses are introduced into the wild, in a timely manner. But when you are like MS, you have an OS or should I say OS's, Office products and all sorts of other products, all that combined with now a security product, which one takes a back seat?

I'm sorry, but I am a true believer that you deal with a company that has ONE purpose and when that company concentrates on that ONE purpose you will get a better product.

It's not even like Defender or MS Security Essentials are MS's own baby, it's not, all they did is purchase another security software company some years back (I forget which one) and changed the GUI on the software a little bit.

I wouldn't take the word of all the Microsoft whores here, because just like Apple and Mac users smugly used to say "we are invulnerable to viruses", well look at them now.
Now all the Microsoft lackeys are saying "you'll be fine with Microsoft's own baked in security", it's a bunch of hooey, Microsoft never has and will never be able to keep up with the major antivirus vendors out there and when something REALLY bad hits the web all those that said "you'll be fine" are going to be the first ones shot out of the water.

They are finding holes in Windows 8 on almost a daily basis, this OS was released WAYYYY to prematurely and just like I stated above, Windows 8 and Android are going to become some pretty big targets in 2013 and I am just not going to trust Microsoft to keep my system safe, as a far as I am concerned, their track record alone doesn't even warrant me to even consider it.

Cmon people this could go on forever, I just got AVG and I thought this thread might be educational.. enough with the AV wars and bring on the facts/tips if you have them! From the small amount of research I did AVG DOES outperform Defender, but not by a landslide.

If anyone has any helpful information regarding running AVG on Windows 8, I will be watching this thread. Thanks

I have AVG 2013. I got it because the Windows 8 Update Adviser said AVG 2012 was not compatible. AVG scans incoming e-mail. I don't know whether Windows Defender does or not. To me that would be an advantage.
Just my 1.5 cent worth.

For people who torrent, use their computer widely, etc. I recommend AVG 2013. It is perfectly compatible with windows 8, as you can see it was designed around it. Windows defender isn't sufficient for some people, as it won't pick up viruses that have crypts such as RAT's. Even top of the line A/V a lot of the time won't pick up some RAT's. Windows does have security holes, and lots of them.

Sorry, but you couldn't pay me to put AVG on any system. If I felt I needed something more, I would go with ESET as a first choice, I haven't researched AV in a long time, but I can tell you, AVG has always been garbage. Yeah, it might run, but does it actually do anything? from my past experience in the consumer PC repair field, no, not a thing. Only when scanned with an alternative scanner did AVG actually pop. This was on several systems over various versions. And the majority of the things it does find? Cookies. I don't need a simple cookie cleaner.

ESET is also very good quality anti virus.
I may go back, because of some compatibility issues. With the help of some people here, I saw that anti virus might be the thing affecting the live tile bug i experienced, and AVG was the cause, it caused a bug where you can't click the live tiles (nothing happens) and my windows key wouldn't even work some times.

Hi there

I think your info here is somewhat misleading.

Windows defender is part of the OS -- how do you "turn it off" !!!!!

The only thing you can do (and it would be really stupid IMO to even THINK about doing this) is to uncheck the box for real time protection --- the rest of the system is still protected however.

Note that if you DO turn off real time protection then explain to me what you would do if during a "batch process" or a background report run gives you a virus.

You won't know WHEN your computer became infected, what was infected or even how to "disinfect it. You surely can't use the Infected OS on the infected system to "repair itself" == that's just plain dumb. !!

Iwould NEVER trust ANY "Cleansing" software to remove a virus -- since AV software can never be 100% certain why should you assume that the "cleansing" software is 100% OK either.

Only a restore from a clean image or a fresh Windows install would satisfy me in this case.

With real time protection you can at least trap the malware before it wreaks havoc on your system.

Cheers
jimbo

WOW  ......... I don't even know how to answer this without being arrogant .... but I'll try.

First, I never said and would NEVER SAY to disable Defender without replacing it with another AV software ...... yes that WOULD be STUPID.

Second, I do not understand how my post was "misleading" when the facts were CLEARLY stated and I am truly sorry but Microsoft's track record speaks for itself.
