torrent users -- beware latest version of Utorrent

Hi there
If you use things like Utorrent (and there are plenty of legit reasons to use some torrents -- Linux distros, Driver packs etc) then DO NOT UPDATE to the latest version of Utorrent.

What it does --even if you don't want the toolbar installed -- adds an "Addon" to IE10 which changes your home page --and it's the devil's own job to undo or get rid of this even if you totally uninstall Utorrent. You can disable the add on but the REMOVE option gets greyed out --also a NO NO in my book.

Fast Solutions: How To Remove uTorrent Toolbar - Fast Solution

This solution "sort of works" but you probably are better off restoring a previous image of your system.

The "Naughty file" is prxtbuTor.dll although it's not actually a Trojan or virus --just handles the toolbar etc stuff.

prxtbutor.dll - What is prxtbutor.dll ?

Some sort of file from Conduit ltd (conduit toolbar).

Utorrent WAS fine -- I don't like "customized toolbars" and I HATE anything that interferes with my default HOME page.

So any utorrent users --DO NOT UPGRADE.

Cheers
jimbo

I'll follow your advice because already from some previous versions, Chrome and Firefox already got toolbars and extensions included, yeah not to mention IE... then you need to uninstall 10 things from 10 different places.

They've made a mess from Utorrent probably since they made PRO version, to make us upgrade.
No on my pc!

I upgraded to the latest version, and I have not had the issues you mention. I said no to the toolbar, and it didn't install it.

Same here, I upgraded to the latest version and no problem. I think the problem is you guys are having fast finger. Please look closely every time you install freewares, they always offer to install additional sh*t such as toolbar, google chrome etc....
just untick those then you won't have any problem. Besides, If you accidentally installed it, it only takes a few minutes at most to clean it up.

Hmmm.. thought I unchecked everything.

I always say "no" and look carefully before I click.
Some items were installed because they aren't mentioned in the checkboxes (depends on version installer). But I guess you don't use or check FFox or Chrome to see additional torrent extensions install all of the sudden.

No big deal guys but the fact that they add more additional - unwanted stuff to the installers is a reality. We'll have to be even more careful now.

I've installed the latest version, and I launched IE (it was dreadful ;n; ) to try and pick up the same thing you described, and I didn't get it.

As long as you untick all the "install toolbar" and "agree with uTirrent web bar blah blah blah" on initial installation, it shouldn't change on an update...

Yes, that's true. Sometimes they just install the extras without prompting you. For IE, just open "Manage Add-on" and disable it, For Firefox, go to Tools->Add-ons and uninstall.

In addition, download Autoruns from MS website. This program will show you the registry entry, file location etc... so you can really clean up and remove them from your PC. Here's the link:

memo to people, you should not just be clicking, clicking, clicking through the install process without knowing what's installing. it's very easy to just pause and uncheck things you don't want installed. I only have utorrent and not all the other stuff installed. All these free software titles have to make money somehow and installing this other stuff brings them money. that's the reality of things.

When you goto the download page for uTorrent, you'll see this:

View attachment 13929

And when you hover your cursor over "Free Download" this will pop up, which I do believe is how everyone is getting tricked...they are clicking too fast:

View attachment 13930

Just simply uncheck the first box and then click download:

uTorrent is a great piece of software and I use it daily for Linux distributions (I run Linux on my laptop) and free games such as those from Perfect World (which graciously offer all their games via torrent from their website).

I don't have popups like that. I use Adblock.
Site wal OK.

During install: you click next, you disable the stuff you don't need and install the program.
After that: I look into Chromium and Firefox and they both have addons which were silently installed.
This was not the most recent installer and maybe they change stuff that comes in the different version along the way.

And I don't need any other extra torrent program around here one is already more that enough.

EDIT: Transmission on Linux works free without any addons.

But thanks to you all who added tips and info here.

Happy new year!

Cheers

I don't have popups like that. I use Adblock

It's technically not a popup (since it doesn't actually pop a new window/tab at you), so it wouldn't be blocked. It still does however "pop" up when you hover over it, but not in the since that a popup would pop.

I believe you but when I visit the page I see something different here:

On download page
01.png

on mouse over:
02.png

NOTHING extra shows up, I just download and run the file from the downloaded location.
So there's no website "scam" (if I can call it that way) but just installer "scam".

I'm already on Chrom(ium) so maybe that's why the annoying "get chrome" thing is missing.

You must have clicked "Other Platforms & Languages" link which leads you to here: Download - µTorrent - a (very) tiny BitTorrent client

Whereas most people would click the "Get uTorrent" button and be directed here: µTorrent - a (very) tiny BitTorrent client

Which is where my images and the mouseOver() thing comes into play.

Yes you're right I see it too!

I've never used that since a very long time. Always clicked on all platforms: better, safer, nicer.

Thanks for pointing it out.
