Solved Firewalling Metro Apps?

Just out of curiosity, can Windows Defender (or any firewall for that matter), firewall Metro apps and prevent them from connecting?

The only Metro app I've used so far is Minesweeper, and there was no notification of an attempt to connect.

Depends on the firewall/how the firewall is set-up, but yes they can. The Windows firewall doesn't have a particularly user friendly interface, so I use a third party one.

For example, BingMaps (Map.exe) is stored in C:\ program Files\Windows Apps\Microsoft.BingMaps...\Map.exe, which although by default you don't have permission to open the folder, if the firewall is correctly configured will pick up that it's trying to connect to the internet via ports 80 and 443 and depending on the firewall will give you the option to block or allow. The same goes for Windows Store with C:\Windows\Winstore\WSHost.exe and C:\Windows\System32\WWAHost.exe, etc.

I don't know if some Apps share the WWAHost for their net connection or not, as I haven't really played with Apps much.

It turns out that Minesweeper was firewalled all along; I just assumed it wasn't.

I use "Windows 7 Firewall Control," which provides a decent front-end to Windows Defender.
