I'd say the inbox Windows Defender (previously known as Microsoft Security Essentials) and SmartScreen filter should be sufficient for just about anyone, unless you have very specific needs that these two don't already cover.

Hard to say - the best anything is subjective in both of those fields. However, only Internet Explorer and Google Chrome install "modern" versions of their browsers, so right now, those are the only two real options for browsers on Windows 8 (unless you only want desktop browsers - then you have all options available).

The best defense is your habits; if you download everything free from CNET you are at risk, I never download anything free from the WEB aside of in a VM or sandbox for test. I sometime have a fake anti-virus that pop up mainly when I search for picture on Google photo, pictures of trains mainly, I'm a train modeler and many web sites hosted for free, maintain by other modelers like me, are contaminated with fake anti-virus, in all the cases, Defender of Security Essential have warm me and take care of it.

Avoid free stuff, especially from a email link, that's my best recommendation.

As far as i know, Norton hogs up your computer resources.

Paid for antiwalware software is redundant. I didn't even buy an OEM version of Norton I could have for $15. No point. Common sense + vetting programs you really need + caution is all you need.

Nice!

I like the part.
Just like dodging bullets with closed eyes, you didn't mentioned Firefox (probably no "modern" app yet).:)
On the other hand, IE10 and Chrome are first at Metro app browsers.

By bullets, I refer to Firefox-crashes that happen frequently on modern CPU's.
You probably encountered this too... Hope it gets fixed.

Back to topic:
Win Defender/Sec Essentials is pretty good (I'm one of the users). For more defense, I'm not that sure but Norton 360 seems very complete + it has a app or two installed. Norton will use more CPU power but it's included in the price you have to pay for more protection.

It depends what sites you visit so you'll never be 100% protected in my opinion.

I try their Symantec End Point Protection on a Server because it was dam cheap, you should see how the Server was crawling after, and on a SBS 2011 server it even have a huge bug, you have to shut down the service once a week and delete their 40 gb + db files

I am not using another AV with Win8. But if I do, it will be Kaspersky. Check it out.

They offer a 30 day free trial without having to give credit card info like Norton.

YOU GUYS CAN TRY AVG INTERNET SECURITY 2013. I AM USING IT FROM LAST ONE MONTH I HAS SIMPLE USER INTERFACE, VIRUS DETECTION RATE OF 98.5%, HEALTHY FIREWALL. THE INBUILT WINDOWS DEFENDER IN WIN 8 IS GOOD BUT THE IT TAKES AGES TO REMOVE THE VIRUS AFTER DETECTING IT.:sarc:

OTHERWISE KASPERSKY, NORTON 360 ALL ARE GOOD TILL THE TIME YOU UPDATE THEM PROPERLY OTHERWISE THEY ARE OF NO USE:geek:

Hi there
Windows 8 has implemented security totally differently to Windows 7 or previous versions of Windows. The security is built right into the kernel itself so the days of third party FREE software (Norton / antimalware bytes etc etc) good though these may have been in the past are now OVER.

Ms doesn't publish the kernel to 3rd parties so your best protection here is Ms itself --and W8 has been getting some decent praise from security experts --rare for an MS product.

The basic windows defender (not the same as the fairly rubbishy version in earlier Windows releases) is about the best you can do on a HOME (not a corporate LAN installation --other considerations here) installation.

You ESPECIALLY don't need to spend any money on PAID FOR junk software that slows your machine down for no purpose whatsoever.

The best mechanism for protecting your machine is YOURSELF.

1) NEVER open email attachments without knowing EXACTLY who sent them and where they came from.

2) If you MUST use torrents - download stuff to a Virtual machine so you can get rid of "Things downloaded" if they include little extra surprises !!.

3) before installing ANYTHING image your system so you can restore it if the application doesn't do what you expected -- saves endless messing about with "Uninstall" or "Registry cleaner" apps.

4) Avoid like the plague those "Sucker applications" or "Sneakerware" like Driver search or similar -- they'll tempt you with all sorts of things like - we've found drivers for you - but then to use the part of the site which "allegedly" has the driver will try and charge you for the service --and all this stuff is public domain anyway.

5) Finally - NEVER EVER download either those "Helper" type apps from these sorts of sites.

Also guys please forget the latest reviews -- these are at least ONE MONTH OUT OF DATE by the time they are published - Viruses can appear at any time instantly and MS usually has the best resources to deal with them.

NONE -- believe me NONE of the current 3rd party stuff like avast, norton, anti malware bytes etc is ANY BETTER and usually worse than the bog standard Windows defender.

I doubt if ANYTHING is truely 100% effective - so as I said before the best protection is YOURSELF. Follow those rules I laid down above and you shouldn't have any problem even if you are using that well known Phillipine site we call the Phillipino felines.

Cheers
jimbo

what is the best compatible windows 8 security?

The shortest answer is: Windows Defender included in Win8.

Because is built-in and integrates flawlessly in the system, it should be considered 100% compatible.
You may not get 100% protection but is 100% compatible.

Works very well for home and basic internet usage.

Agree. I came into contact with a malware site last night while doing a search, first time since I have been using Win8.

Defender alerted me and stated malware was blocked. Only thing different, it stated to reboot to completely remove malware.

Later, I ran the Defender scan, malwarebytes, and the free online Kasperky scan which were all negative.

Essential Security often ask to reboot also with Windows 7 , this is normal
