Crash installing Realtek HDA driver 2.70

I'm connecting my Win8 HTPC to my TV via HDMI, but the default Microsoft audio driver only supports stereo. I'm using the onboard HDMI from my ASRock A75 Pro4-M motherboard.

I have grabbed the latest Realtek driver (v2.70 for Win8; 64-bit to match my system) and ran the installer, but the selected driver remains the Microsoft one.

I have manually pointed Windows to the location of the Realtek driver but windows tells me "The best driver is already installed" and leaves the Microsoft driver in place.

If I force it to use the Realtek driver (uncheck the "Show compatible" box in the drivers list, then scroll down the list to select the Realtek driver), it starts to install the driver and then crashes. After a reboot the Microsoft driver is still in place.

Is there anything I can do about this, other than wait for ASRock or Realtek to provide an updated driver?

    Welcome to EightForums Sir Steyr

Have you visit the official website of the ASRock driver? Please do check the updated driver from their website, we might know that they have the latest driver.

Just in case they do not have the updated driver I suggest to run the HDMI in Win7 OS. As what you have said you experience the crash of the driver, it tells that compatibility is for Win7 OS and better not to take risk for it might crash the system.

Just let us know what you have encounter with the driver.

I note that you are running the Consumer Preview - this has already been followed by the Release Preview - have you tried this?

One thing that device chip manufacturers will not be doing is developing drivers for obsolete, superceded beta versions.

I found that some drivers have been fixed for the RP - the Intel onboard graphics accelerator for one. You may find that the Realtek driver is fixed too.

Sorry, my profile is incorrect - I am running the release preview, build 8400. When I check for updates there are none available.
The ASRock website has the Realtek 2.61 driver for download, but that fails in exactly the same way as the 2.70 driver from the Realtek website.

So I'm pretty much stuck. I was building this as a HTPC (Metro is a good interface for casual computing from the couch) but only having 2 channel audio is a bit of a deal breaker!
I might see if I can switch over to component cable for the audio instead, until Microsoft or Realtek come to the party for me.

Can you give it a try for one more suggestion that I think, just one more.

    Uninstall the Driver then Restart.

Open Windows Update then click Check for updates.

Don't forget to Restart when update is available.

Microsoft's own drivers only play stereo.

I updated microsoft's drivers using this download "motherboard_driver_audio_realtek_azalia-ati" this then allowed me to update to the latest realtek 2.70 version.

bart666 - that worked!! (Kind of)
That ATI driver installed, but I still can't install the latest Realtek 2.70 driver.
However the ATI driver gives me 7.1 channels, so that's good enough for now.

    Thank you so much!!!

Great, Glad it worked for you.

I did notice that the ATI driver gave 7.1 sound, as this was what I was after also.

I struggled to get a driver to load & replace microsofts so used the hardware ids in the driver info page to find the compatible drivers "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1002&DEV_AA01&SUBSYS_00AA0100" I copied & pasted into google. This led me to the drivers I posted above.

Just posted this as it may come in handy in the future for you.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Bart,
I'm having the exact same problem - when you say you updated Microsoft'a driver, can you please elaborate how you did this. I would really appreciate help, I've spent hours trying to fix this with no luck!

    Hi Flintron,

That was quite a while ago, but if memory serves me correctly, Once I had downloaded the drivers I went into

control panel - device manager -Sound,Video and game controllers,

Right click on High Definition Audio Device

    Click :- Update driver software...

click :- Browse my computer for driver software

click :- Let me Pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

    Click :- "have disk..." button

    Click :- "Browse..." button

point it to the extracted downloaded file location and you should be able to select the driver.

    Hopefully that should work ok.

    Kind Regards

P.S. when I done a clean install with windows 8 Pro after its release, I did not have this issue with sound drivers.
