Xbox One headset use with laptop

Today I bought an Xbox One stereo headset for use with my computer (because it was cheap) I got home and plugged it into my computer and the audio worked and came through the headset like I expected but when I went to sound recorder to see if the microphone worked and the green bar that usually moves around depending on how loud you talk wasn't there. I went down to my volume icon and right clicked and went to recording devices and it shows stereo mix as being active. I have a headset that uses a usb connector and this works fine on my computer. (My computer has the one audio jack not 2)

My first thought is that my computer doesn't support having both mic and audio in the one audio jack, how do I know if this is the case
