Maybe just HD Audio manager got updated, can't find which version it is. Or just added support for some new CODEC chips.

And also on the Realtek web site (but not yet posted on Filehippo; that will soon change by the next day or two). Driver version included in R2.76 package is 6.0.1.7487. One codec chip I know of that's being added is the hardware device ID beginning with HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0293. DEV 0293 [aka. ALC293] is new (found on a Dell Latitude E5450 laptop).

Personally I'll install that one on my custom built PC with an old Intel motherboard using Realtek ALC861 audio chips. The other machines I have, I'll just obtain Realtek driver updates from PC manufacturers when the driver version reaches 7500 or higher and skip installing the R2.76 package on those machines.

Ever since I updated my Realtek drivers I've lost HDMI as a digital output in HD Manager. Would anyone know why this has happened? I've read that it may be due to the Nvidia drivers taking over the HDMI audio control. If that's the case would a complete uninstall of the Nvidia and Realtek drivers followed by an re-install of the Realtek HD audio drivers before the Nvidia drivers cure the problem?

    Many thanks for any advice.

Windows lets you use only one sound device at a time. You are probably right, HDMI is digital output and Windows favors digital out. HDMI sound driver is installed with GPU drivers.
You can go to Control Panel > Sound and set Speakers as default sound device.

Where do you take your HDMI from, the motherboard or the GPU? Makes a difference which driver is providing the audio, the CPU or GPU.

Official R2.77 (6.0.1.7503) Realtek HD Audio driver package released 5/11/2015.

btw, a DIFFERENT audio driver is used for HDMI and it is NOT Realtek. It's either from AMD, Intel or nVidia.

Thanks! I would get them from Softpedia though, the Realtek site has always been a bit flaky and slow, at least for me.
