Digital Audio (HDMI) only has 2 channel option

    Hi,

I've been running on W8 Consumer Preview since release without any trouble at all. Yesterday I installed the Release Preview and I've encountered a problem. My PC outputs to the amplifier via HDMI on my graphic card (Radeon HD 6700). The problem is that in the speaker configuration from playback devices only allows me to select 2 channel audio, and has no option for 5.1, so anything which tries to play 5.1 audio will result in no sound output.

I've installed the latest release of the Catalyst Control Center released 31 May (for Windows 8 RP). This was all working perfectly under the Consumer Preview.

Any idea how to get it to work?

Edit: I know HDMI is not selected as default device in the screenshot above. That's not an issue as XBMC always outputs from HDMI irrespective of my default choice.

    this is quite normal.

all digital outputs cannot be configured in windows - this is why you can only see 2 channels. this setting applies only for analog audio as it is processed by windows. As it is digital signal streamed to external decoder - windows setting doesn't mean anything, correct format is encoded by source app and decoded by ext. device.

i tested it on 2 different computers, with hdmi, digital coax and spdif.

if u get no sound over hdmi at all - try to install different driver.

The problem seemed to be that the Catalyst drivers provided for W8 by AMD do not contain the HDMI Audio drivers by Realtek for the HDMI Output. I managed to track down this fact using the vendor and device ID and then got the Windows 7x64 drivers for the ATI HD Audio.

Now 5.1 is selectable from the speakers under HDMI audio and everything is working fine:

I'm having the same issue with a 6870.

Do you have a pointer to the driver you used? I tried one of the Realtek HDMI audio drivers, but it must've been the wrong one as it didn't work.

    Hi,

I have the same problem: Digital Audio (HDMI) is Greyed Out. Image goes to my Receiver/TV, but no Audio.

    My System:

    Dell XPS 15z notebook
    NVidia Geforce 525M

    - I installed NVidia Driver 302.80, release a week or so.
    - Installed Realtek Driver from the previous post
    - Tryed to install the HDMI_R270.exe, but this seems to be an ATI only driver.

    I'm using Win8 RP 64-bit.

    Appreciatte any help, thanks.

PS: After installing INtel HD 3000 driver and reinstalling NVidia and Realtek, I have only the "speakers" icon under SOUNDS. Not even the greyed out HDMI icon...

I have the same problem and it's driving me mad!!
Running an ASRock A75 Pro4-M motherboard and trying to use the onboard HDMI.
By default the Microsoft driver is installed.
I've tried installing the latest drivers form both Realtek and ASRock, and in both cases the installation does its thing but the driver still remains the useless Microsoft one.
If I try to manually update the driver to the one I downloaded, it tells me that the "best" driver is already installed and will not switch away from the Microsoft driver. WTF?!?!

    Hi chaps.

A fellow sufferer from the same 'stereo only' option via hdmi here.

I recently completed a custom gaming HTPC build and am running audio from an Asus AMD 7770 over HDMI to a Sony STR DH800 receiver using Win 8 64-bit release preview.

I've been trying for days to try and resolve this but no luck as of yet. I've tried a multitude of Catalyst and Realtek drivers (Win8 +Win7, including the one mentioned by josephdebono) but whatever happens, I always seem to end up with the default Microsoft driver for the 'HDMI Audio Device', and as a result just the option to use 2 speakers.

I wonder, why then, the 3rd party catalyst/realtek drivers don't appear to be installing over the MS one. One thought is, I have disabled onboard audio. I can't see how, but is there any way in which this could impact upon the driver installation for the HDMI on my graphics card?

I'm fairly certain this isn't related to my receiver as I've used it with a laptop running Win7 via HDMI and had no problems getting 5.1.

    @Steyr,

    Thanks for the reply.

After looking at that thread it seems as though I'm having the same issue as you were, the only difference being that you're using onboard HDMI vs HDMI on the video card. Hopefully it won't matter though, I'll certainly take a look at that driver later tonight and see what happens.
