Windows thinks that headphones are still plugged in.

Hi,
So I've been running Windows 8.1 for a long time now without fault but now for some reason Windows thinks I still have headphones plugged in the front audio jack. This is causing sound to always come through the "headphones" even when they are not plugged in. I've solved it temporarily by changing the default device but I need a permanent solution i.e. stop making my computer think there are headphones being used.

I've tried solutions from people who had similar problems e.g. no sound through speakers, windows not recognizing headphones et cetera but none of them work. I tried system restoring and uninstalling the drivers.

I do not have a "sound card" installed and have an AMD ASUS motherboard using AMD HD audio.
No realtek.

Not all of front case audio connectors have a sensor for discovering what and if something is plugged in and therefore can't relay that to SW.

Your motherboard does have on-board audio, RealTek. The AMD HD Audio is most likely for HDMI audio.

A defective jack can cause the problem you are having. Disconnect the front panel connection to the motherboard (power off when you do this). Power on and see if you have regained speaker audio (make sure the "Speakers" (RealTek) is set as the default audio playback device,.

As for the realTek my bad. It's just that I have not seen any indication of it being on there.
And I tried to disconnect my front panel jacks but the problem persists, I'm thinking this probably is a faulty jack now.
Also, sorry for the long reply. Been having a faulty internet lately too here.

So I disconnected the front jacks and the computer no longer recognized the headphones (which are USB, same as the speakers) I plugged it back in and the problem is still there. Any ideas at all?
(I only just noticed the RealTek symbol on my motherboard too, whoops I guess)

You didn't say that they are USB, what happens when you "Safely remove and eject" them first ?

Sorry, what I meant by usb is that they use the USB ports to provide power there is no actual information being transferred. The computer doesn't recognize them as a USB device.
