Sudden sound collapses, fixes after restarting

I'm running Windows 8.1 and everything's been fine up until two days ago. At least once a day my sound simply stops working for some reason. When I try to make a Skype call or play an mp3 file it says that there is a problem with my playback device. Happens both to headphones and speakers, meaning it's nothing to do with them. After restarting the computer it goes back to normal, but happens again the next day. Since I don't wanna be restarting all the time, I need a long-term solution. Things I've tried:

- Checking my drivers, all updated
- Setting a different playback device as default
- Plugging it out and back in (cliche, I know)

None of those worked. So if someone could help me solve this, it'd be great.

Thanks in advance!

Since this worked OK and now does not, first step is to use System Restore and restore the PC back to an available restore date that is BEFORE the problem. Sounds like something was installed or updated that caused it.
